Do you have a preference?

I'm definitely a movie, then book person.

Obviously movies can't go into as much detail as a book, and if I read the book first I'm pretty likely to be disappointed with the movie.

The book/movie which was the decider on this for me was 'The Power of One' by Bryce Courtney. Loved the book, the movie just seemed full of holes after reading it though :-( Reply to this

I usually like the books better. They give more detail than the movies.

Mine was Angelas Ashes. I forget the name of the author. I saw the movie years before reading the book. Reply to this

If you're going to read/see both, which order do you prefer Mel? Reply to this

I dont think I mind which order.

Sometimes I skip the movie if I hear bad reviews when it is about a serious subject. I watch the movie if it is made in such a way as it gets the message accross the way the book intended.

For example, I heard that the film made of Not Without my Daugher by Betty Mahmoody made a real farse of the serious subject the book is about, so I did not see the film at all and dont think I want to. Reply to this

I've found books are almost always so much better. My imagination is far superior to any cutting edge cinematography out there. So, when possible, I go book before movie.

That way, leaving the theatre, I can be the guy you overhear saying, 'urgh... the book was so much better. You gotta read it!' Reply to this

Me too.

But I'm not a purist - I've seen plenty of movies that I've then gone on to read the book - I think there is something though about giving away the ending. A book is so much more of an investment in time and you put so much more of yourself into it - your imagination - days or weeks in some cases - knowing what will happen at the end cause you've seen the movie spoils it.

Where as I take that attitude that a movie is a casual 2 hours of entertainment something to relax with or laugh at or just marvel at.

Books to Movies;

Lord of the Rings, Narnia, there are many more...

Movies to Books;

The Perfect Storm, The Beach...

The list is honestly not that short!! - I'm just drawing a blank at the moment 😊 Reply to this

I never actually thought of it that way before - but agree with you there Ali. Maybe I'll try reversing my 'policy' :-) Reply to this

I prefer the books before seeing the movie, even when i know i will probably not like the movie very much after that.

I read Harry Potter before the movies and i really don't like the movies, while the Lord of the Rings is one of my favorites (books as well as movies, even though some parts are missing).

Maybe it has to do with how you imaginate things when you're reading. You automatically compare your thoughts with what's on the screen...and if there's a horrible difference it's easier to say it's a bad movie 😉

And sometimes i see a movie and never read the book.
