India on a shoestring?

Will about 1500 USD be enough for 6-8 weeks in India?

So I am currently in my first year of university, I took a year off after high school and travelled around south east asia including some crazy parts of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea...so I believe that I have good travel wits about me, and fairly experienced. But this routine of life right now is killing me. I need to get away again...and it turns out that I will have a 2 month window from the end of April to the end of June to escape once agian...this time to India. India has been calling me for quite some time now and I just have to go. After the cost of the flight I will have about 1500 USD for travel money, Will this be sufficient? Like I said I have travelled on a shoestring budget before and have no problem staying in cockroach infested rooms with squat toilets. How much is the price of things in india? like train fares, food and accommodation? I prefer to travel on packed trains with people hanging out the doors and sitting on the roof, adds a bit of excitement to the mix. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks soo much!

Hello John 😊

Yes, that will be enough for 8 weeks.

Depending on which part of India you are in, you can get a budget room from 5 US to 15 US per night. Food: Dinner would cost a couple of dollars in a modest restaurant. Trains: I travelled with my boyfriend and daugher by train second class from Delhi to Agra, then from Agra to Delhi, then from Delhi to Kurukshetra then from Kurukshetra to Dehli then from Delhi to Haridwar then from Haridwar to Delhi. The tickets for all three of us altogether cost 25 Euros. Dont know what that is in US. 35 maybe. This was around a month ago.

LOL You wont be short of that kind of excitement anywhere in India. If you want even more of it, then travel 3rd class.

hi john,

It is real fun when you hang out of a city bus or out of a fast moving train...The best place to do it is mumbai....talk to some student or english speaking youngster in the local train platform before the train arrives and ask him to help you out with the hanging and surely you will find someone who will guide you with that....

I dont think travelling on the roof is safe by any standard...dont ever do it...many people fall off and get wounded on the top of the train ....Hanging out of train is dangerous too but its danger is a little low....I used to do it all the time when i went to college....just try to befriend someone who will teach you the ropes.....

dont do top train travel....many die ...sometimes branches of trees swipe people off the top part ....

have fun.... Reply to this
