Is it worth visiting Mexico city? What are the pros and cons? Name some worthwhile things you have done and places you have visited in and near Mexico city?
Hi
I am going to mexico for 10 days with 2 friends. we are flying into mexcio city and then takeing a bus down to puerto escondido for most of the time and then bussing it back to mexico city to leave. what i was wondering was if it was worth puting a few days aside to look around mexico city? iv herd mixed reviews about it and didnt no if we should just use it as an exit and entrance point or stay a few days there. any info would be great, thanks.

Reply to this hey sophie, im not a fan of big citys and therefore put off a visit even though im living quite close. ended up spending a week there last month with some friends and we all had a great time and in the end was no where near enough time.....but it all depends what you are into.
At least check out the zocalo and the area around. other than that id recommend the wrestling for some light hearted entertainment. the anthropology musuem is amazing if you into that sort of thing and chapultepec park is worth a visit especially the castle.
and of course there are the hundreds of bars to fill in the rest of the time.
10 days isnt alot of time so really depends if you want to sacrifice beach for city, id personally go for the beach!
other thing id look into is flights from mex to escondido which will basically save you a day and might not cost much more with the cheap airlines.
have a great trip
Reply to this I just got back from Mexico City...it was my first time there. I was pleasantly surprised. I stayed in the Hostal Coyote Flaco in the Colonia Coyocan. This is a very nice place with a lot of cool places to walk to.
I was there for a month but didnt get a chance to do much looking around the city. But I know there are tons of places to go visit.
As for danger, its a huge city so there is always a risk. Just use your common sense and you'll be fine.
Reply to this Hello Sophie 😊
I visited Mexico city a couple of times. There was nothing in particular I did there, but I did enjoy it, because it is an exotic foreign city for me.
I think it is worth spending a few days there at the end of a trip because it has all the things that are good about big cities. Nice restaurants, cafes, shops... I really enjoy those after spending some time in small villages.

Reply to this We have been to Mexico City twice, using it as our beginning and ending point for trips through Mexico. We really love it there...there is so much to do and see! Take the tourist bus around on the first day...get off and on as you like...
Visit the ruins in the main zocalo
Go to the Anthropology museum and the Belles Arts Museum
Visit the Dolores Almeda Museum who was Diego Rivera´s patron
Go to Frida Khalo´s house
Take a boat around the canals in the south part of the city (the train goes right near them)
And there´s much more if you have time....!
Reply to this i loved mexico city - although i loved puerto escondido as well! if you do decide to stay a couple of days, I really recommend a day trip to teotihuacan. most tours also seem to take in a local cafe where you get to try all the traditional drinks (including a beer made from cactus), and traditional aztec food! the zocalo is great for a stroll in the evenings.
have fun!
Reply to this Dude, I'm so envious. I lived in Mexico from November 2001 until July 2002. I visited both Puerto Escondido and Mexico City and thoroughly enjoyed both. Someone mentioned Chapultepec Park and the anthropology museum, which are fantastic, but I could just wander around the Zocalo for ages. I'd say take a day (and definitely a night--there are too many good bars and clubs to not stay a night) in Mexico City. Also check out the Pan-American Tower (I think that's the name). It's not too far from the Zocalo and it gives a great view of the city.
If only you had more time, I'd recommend spending a day in Oaxaca (the city), too--it's awesome! Enjoy your trip!
