I would ideally like to travel in Burma, Thailand, Cambodia and vietnam and I'm wondering if three months is long enough? This is my first independant travelling and I don't want to go for too long. I initially thought just to travel around Thailand for three months would be better for my first time but I really want to get out there, any opinions on which I should do?
Also I'm wondering about costs, how much would it be to travel the four countries?
I'll be grateful for any help you can give!

Hello Polly 😊

I would aim loosely at having 20 Euros(for a backpacker budget type trip) per day. Also, have 100 extra for each month, for visa and any unforeseen expenses that happen. You likely wont need all of that 100 per month, but best to have a margin of error....

I'm wondering if three months is long enough?

In my opinion there is not a particular amount of time that a person should have. However, the more you move around the more the trip will cost because of transport and visa costs.

There is no real reason why you should not visit 4 contries. The countries you want to go to are easily accessable from Thailand. Do keep in mind that Thai entry and exit rules change so know the latest ones if you are planning to enter and exit Thailand a number of times.

3 months is plenty of time to see a lot of each country. You won't see every little thing but then again it would take years to do that in any country. We did a similar trip but didn't get to Burma and did get to Laos, Malaysia,Borneo and Indonesia. Take a look at our blog if you like for an idea of how long we spent where. I'm sure your itinerary will differ to ours but it's nice to have an idea what other people fit in.
Budget-wise we got by easily on $30 per day in total for both of us. This included accommodation and transport and more often than not we had money left over which we would save for a splurge. Reply to this

Thankyou Ant/Allee you're very helpful, and you're right I need an idea of everything really! I'm nervous even about planning this trip as I really want to do everything right, I'm good at messing up and messing up in another coutry would be scary! Reply to this

I think it is unlikely that you will mess up your trip, since you are researching it before you go.

Do you have a copy of SE Asia on a Shoestring by Lonely Planet? It covers all the countries on your list in one book. It costs around 35 Euros but worth the money for the information it gives about health, accomodation, customs, things to see, safety, transport....... Reply to this

Don't woryy about anything going wrong. I think the entire nature of longer-term travel means that even if things do get bumpy you'll probably take it with a pinch of salt. Some of the best experiences you'll have are the spontaneous moments and the times where your heart is in your mouth become the times you laugh about with other travellers over a beer. Even if you ended up on a bus to a village miles from anywhere that's not in the guidebook you would probably get the warmest welcome of your trip there and your most authentic experience.

I'm sure everything will go fine and you'll have a great time. Reply to this
