For years I have been wanting to travel the world, experience different cultures, learn more about myself and do everything that I suppose everyone wants to do! I am 24, have had a couple of media-based jobs - each doing something different. I have found a job that I enjoy, it's stressful and the hours are long but I know that by putting in the work it will pay off eventually.
However I still want to travel, and now my boyfriend of five years has just resigned from his job. He now has no commitments - we live with his parents whilst saving up for our own place - and I can't shake off the need to travel and neither can he. I wouldn't even mind working abroad, in fact I would prefere that rather than just visiting loads of places and come back broke, especially as I have got rid of debts bar the student loan.
I'm just desperate to do something out of my comfort zone. I've always gone the safe route, school, college, university, jobs and just feel that if I don't take the plunge now, when will I? I've been in my current job for about 8 months, but worried that taking a break from my new-ish career will be detrimental in the future. I've gone from production to journalism to PR within a couple of years so it's not as if I've stuck at one thing for longer than a year. If I go traveling I want to make sure it's for the right reasons, but am I just thinking over things too much and missing the opportunity to just go and do it?
Honest advice desparetly wanted!!
Reply to this Hello Emma 😊
I met an American journalist when I was in Kyrgyzstan. She was based in China. Seems to me that journalism is one of those careers that can land you in some interesting locations.
The jouranalists who cover the news in other countires like the American woman I met seem to be very dedicated. She said it is a matter of being very determined. She said she was plain pushy about getting that assignment. :D She said it is more a matter of being skilled with delivering accurate reports very quickly, rather than a lot of training and experience in journalism.
Maybe you could try to get journalist assignments in exciting locations for a few years and then rebase yourself back in your own country and take shorter trips then. That would allow you to have things like a family, a home etc as well as your career.
