Hey
Me and my boyfriend are planning to go to Kathmandu in June 2009, and from there to Lhasa overland via Mount Everest base camp and then by train to Beijing. I understand that we have to book a tour in Kathmandu to do this, but does someone know about a good agancy? And is it better to book already now or is it possible to get one when we have arrived in Kathmandu, we have planned to stay for a few days in Kathmandu befor leaving for Lhasa.

Really greatful to get any tips.

Hey,

Dont book now, many travel agents they try to charge more for online queries, interinaries. When u will be there in KTM there are dozens of hundreads og tour agencies, just walk on the streets of Thamel and walk in to some of them compare prices and choose one u think combination of price and experience seems good.

Officialy there on a trips to Tibet from Nepal, you go on a group tourist visa where you and your whole trip program has to meet some strict requirements. But remember that group visa is only issued for the duration of the Tibet trip(max28 days!!) and u cant extend it/change it(few people were lucky to change it to regular tourist visa). After Tibet trip if u have still some spare days on your visa u have to make it as quick as possible out of China(like HK) to get a regular visa out there.

BTW: Make sure if you need just couple of days in China after Tibet trip, that travel agency that u will use will apply for max.28 days visa(simply they have to lie and in the interinary sent to chinese embassy they have to put that trip is for 28days ,but in the real life it would be for 10 days for an instant) and then you would still have like 18days of travel in China on a valid visa.

Hope it helps a little bit.

I recommend you to use a personal tour guide when do trip in Beijing. It is the direct way and it help to save a lot of money. You can search on google with the key words: personal tour guide beijing and then you can get some travel ideas. However, it will spend time to select a good tour guide who is knowledge, responsive and reasonable. Reply to this

Hi,

I have travelled twice from Kathmandu to Lhasa by Landcrouiser. The trip is fantastic ,one of my best
trips. I have also took the train cross Tibet. It is a long journey. Of course if you have enough time in
Kathmandu you can arrange there your trip.( As the postwriter above told you) But if you have only
a few days in Kathmandu I recommend to make a booking ahead. The tour leaving every Thuesdays and Saturdays. Only this two days starts the tours. And They need to arrange your TTB (Tibet permit) and it
will take sometimes more as few days. But if you send a copy of your passport ,they can work ahead and apply for a visa for you. It is only take 1 day so you can be sure that you will get your visa in time and take the tour to Tibet. The embassy is only open for 1 or 2 hours daily and sometimes closed. So I would not take the risk if I had only a few days in Kathmandu. Everytime I used the same agency (there are many) and they were very professional and helpful. Check out their webside: www.himalayanabode.com . Nabin is very nice guy. There are price differences between agencies. People sometimes take the cheap services and they think they made a good deal. And on the trip they will get very bad accomodation and no food provided. Maybe saved $50 in Kathmandu but spend $ 100 more on the trip . So I recommend to try to contact with Nabin and find out
what is the best for you. I hope you know the Chinese visa is not good for Tibet. And you better ask when
the border will be open because sometimes they close it
I hope it was heplful
I wish you a pleasent journey....enjoy it!
