I will be travelling South India in April 2009 and need some suggestions.
I'm a Tamil female from Canada so I'm a little nervous about travelling south India on my own. I have the advantage of knowing the language (except with a Sri Lankan accent) in Tamil nadu but I also want to check out Kerala as well.
What are some cities/villages that I should not miss?
The plan so far is to fly into Chennai, head to Madurai for some volunteer work for a week or two, then head towards Kerala to visit Cochin. I also want to see Bangalore and Pondicherry somewhere in between and I'm planning to couchsurf so I'd meet people.
Suggestions??

First of all get ready to sweat. It would be really hot in South of India in April.
1. Tamil Nadu's centuries old Temples.
2. In Kerala: Cochin, Varkala, Wynad
3. In Karnataka: Mysore Palace, Hampi besides Bangalore
All the best.

Reply to this Never travel to India alone if ur a female ........it's not safe one bit...I would suggest u travel in a small group and include one male in your group...All the best and yes South India is really beautiful....All the best
Reply to this All my friends from Europe have travelled alone allover India and nothing has happenned so far.
Reply to this In Tamil Nadu you can explore the nature in Kodaikanal ( 120 km from Madurai ), Yercaud, Ooty.
Madurai, Kanchipuram, Mamallapuram, Kanyakumari are some of the places well known for the temples and architecture.

Reply to this I traveled in a whirlwind tour over South India by car with a friend. Unless you're a devout Hindu, I'd say Trichy and Madurai are not worth the visit. Kanyakumari, the Periyar Tiger Reserve, Mysore and Kochi are definitely worth it, as are Mahabalapuram and Pondicherry. Beyond that, I didn't find Tamil Nadu to be that interesting, perhaps it will be a completely different experience for you though since you speak the language.
Lemme know if you need any more detailed info.
