Hello,
According to my Lonely Planet book, you need a special driver's license in order to rent a scooter in Bali. They warn me about getting pulled over by the police and receiving huge fines if I do not have this certification
I've noticed through the travel blogs that a lot of people seem to drive while they are in Bali. Do you guys have that special license? Is it actually necessary? Has anyone been hassled before?
Thanks!
Reply to this no you dont need a special registration to rent a scooter in bali, when you rent, ask the renter for the scooters registration. If you do not produce the registration in the event that you are pulled over, the bribe/fine will be huge.
Police in bali are very corrupt, and sometimes if they even see a white person driving they will pull you over for "alleged" infractions....be cool and dont argue. and be cool and discreet with your bribes, dont discuss bribes with the police and dont openly hand over cash.
Reply to this I spent a couple of weeks in Bali recently and didn't have a driver's licence. I think I had the registration, but never needed it. The only time I got pulled over by police was to suggest I check out some new accommodation that was nearby, which was probably owned by his cousin or brother.
