my first trip overseas i want to go to europe but im having trouble deciding where to go?
hey everyone!
im jsut at the beginning of planning my trip around europe. I most want to go to spain but i still want to see the other countries also, but im jsut going no where i dont know how long to spend in places. i dont want my trip to be heaps of places crammed into a few weeks. Is it better to see a little bit of everything or a lot of a few places??

Whether you see a little of a lot of places or visa versa is entirely up to you. What do you feel like doing? If there is a place that particularly appeals to you then see a lot of it. Otherwise spend a little time in each place and consider the time you spend in each a to be a taster.
I would spend at least 3 nights at each place you stop to prevent rushing too much. If you rush too much you will end up spending too much time on getting from here to there.
If it was my trip I would just take in some of Spain and maybe Portugal.

Reply to this I moved this to the New to Independent forum. Maybe there will be people looking in this forum with more advise to give.

Reply to this As Mell says, it's better to see fewer places. Many first time travelers see something like 10 cities in 14 days and subsequently it all blurs together. Plus the more time you spend in a place, the more time you have to get off the tourist circuit and see the "real" city.
Right off the top of my head, I'd definitely say Spain/Portugal would be 3 weeks easily. Probably half in each, but I wouldn't make too aggressive an itinerary: you'll quickly learn more there than you ever could from pre-trip research.
Reply to this My own personal taste disagrees with the other posters. My first trip in Europe I picked my destinations based off of what I wanted to see, and I only spent 1 or 2 full days in each location.
Once I pick a continent (or a country) I'll just research the heck outta it, finding all different sorts of things I want to see/do. Eventually you'll notice a trend that either there's only 2 or 3 things you HAVE to see, or you'll see a lot of things clustered in a smaller geographic area.
Whatever you decide stay at least one full day in a city, and it helps when writing out your itinerary to assume you won't be able to do any siteseeing on 'travel days' -- moving from one city to the next. Either from setbacks from getting lost, delayed, or because you'll want that time to explore the city, walk around and seeing what everything is about. That way, if you are on only a 2 week vacation, and every other day you have blocked off to go from one place to the next, you might be discouraged to go to so many places and strike a fair balance.
Google calendar is great for mocking up itineraries, it's easy to create plans for the day and rearrange.
