Hello Claire 😊

I removed your URLs because of the big spam problem we have on this site. You can send the links to anyone who wants to see them via the private messaging system. Sorry to inconvenience you like this. 😊

Would those replying give Claire general information about how to choose the best backpack for her needs.

When I travel, I generally take the smallest bag that will hold what I need to take with me. Carrying around a heavy backpack can become a real pain.

I agree, regardless of the bag, the lighter the better. Don't buy a heavy backpack, you know, heavy when its empty. There are lots like that! A good rule of thumb is to pack it like you were really leaving, then put it on and walk a mile. You will probably decide you have way too much stuff. Most people take too much stuff and not enough money 😊 There is nothing worse than a heavy bag (well, besides uncomfortable shoes!). I have had backpacks I seriously wanted to drop in the street and leave behind. Always take into consideration you will likely be *adding* to your load as the trip goes on, not having less.

For cheap, try military surplus or a discount outfitter. Just type backpack+discount into a search bar and go from there. Reply to this

Hey Claire,

Try the Outdoor Emporium on Kentish Town road in Camden Town - they're an independent hiking / outdoor shop & the guy that runs it is very helpful. He's helped me out on a few occasions!

My mate had a really good australian backpack which could zip open like a suitcase, which is great for getting your stuff in / out quickly... It also meant you could zip the straps up and treat it like a suitcase - which is useful as otherwise you have to check your luggage in the "oversized" section at airports (airports like stansted don't like dangling straps). Sometimes he had to do this anyway though, so not such a biggie. His bag did cost quite a lot of money mind you! So as peeps say, rather some travel money than an expensive bag lol.

Hav fun! x Reply to this

i'd go as small as possible, my gf and i are getting reay for an 8 month trip. I'll be taking my 35 liter bag, which worked great for me in europe. Yesterday my gf bought her bag, a womens 40 l terra from north face. These are both expidition packs not travel packs. travel packs tend to be large and the weight is spread out over the back (tend to be wider)
expidtion packs are smaller and less wide ( so the weight is on your spine and hips-which is better for your back)

you don't need to take a lot, dont get suckered into an 80l bag, everyone hates a big bad a couple weeks in to the trip, not worth it Reply to this
