I would like to ascent the Kinabalu and I have some questions. If anybody has several tips for me, give me a answer please...

- what is the best time to ascent the mountain ( may be we would start in January or February next year)
- it is necessary to reserve a guide before we start to Malaysia or can we book it on site in Kota Kinabalu
- what are the whole costs for two guys (guide, admission for the park, accommodation a.s.o.)
- if anybody has additional tips for me, don't hesitate to give it me

Hi Dirk,

I climbed Mount Kinabalu in June 2006, It was a fantastic experience, although legs ached for about 4 or 5 days after, especially coming down stairs - but it is well worth it.

We booked in advance before leaving. This is recommended because only so many people are allowed per day because you have to stay in the accomodation at the halfway point. The options were there in Kota Kinabalu to book it but we heard that poeple that were doing this were not getting a choice of when they could do it - they had to accept whatever day was available or if there was a cancellation. I think you should definately book in advance.

I cant remember what price I paid but I booked it through a Sabah tourism website and they booked an extra day afterwards to go trekking in the national park on some of the trails but even though we had paid for this we just went back to KK as there was no way that we could have done any more walking! so i would not book any deal like this - just go for the mountain and then have a couple of days chilling at the beaches of Tunku Abdul Ramen Park.

The drinks at the resthouse are very expensive so take some money - or stick to water. The water at the resting points on the way up the mountain - we drank it without treating it and so was everyone else - we never got sick - I think because it is higher altitude the risks of infection are slimmer - but its up to you if feel like taking the risk - but we ran out of water it was welcomed.

It is very cold at the resthouse although they do have heating and it is cold on the second day of the trek. Be careful on the way down - I slipped twice and really hurt my elbow which was badly bruised and swollen.

Have a great time!

Hi Dirk,

I would personally say between the months of May through November when the rainy season is well away. However do expect the unexpected, as weather may be quite unpredictable at times. For a 3d /2n summit climb package, it will set you back around rm900 plus which you can make reservations with www.suterasanctuarylodges.com - they manage all accommodations around Sabah's national parks. The package is inclusive of all meals, 2nites stay (park & mt. hut), mt. guide, park & insurance fee/permit. You'll need to find your owwn way to the park, though (public buses are fine and charged at rm20 per way). You can also opt for a 2d/1n package but that will be on your own 'pick&patch' arrangement.

Hope the above helps. Good luck in reaching the peak! Reply to this
