Anyone with recent reports, from Guate to Copan to Puerto Cortes? Just wondering, have heard (exagerated?) stories of gang crime.
Thanks
Reply to this Kidnappings of the privileged in Guate are down in the past three years, only a few ricos have bodyguards and dark tinted windows on their huge SUVs which spells firepower...this is more an in country prob...doesn't happen with tourists. The kidnappers desciribed by locals as crazy "loco"--mostly glue sniffers whose brains have gone off for awhile. Their nutso way of getting even with those who have more in country.
Reply to this In Guatemala with a local who reports occassional robberies by gangs (at times coordinated with the more corrupt police) on the "chicken" buses--if happens, no one is exempt, even the poor are robbed...doesn't happen often but enough recently so feel safer renting a car or going by van or taxi. The chicken buses are the old "BlueBird" school buses shipped in from the USA and decorated with colorful designs and mostly which blow out a lot of dark CO 2 fog especially when going uphill. The bus drivers have complained about it but nothing is as yet being done to enforce or protect the drivers or the buses. Parts of Guate is described by locals as the Wild West.
Reply to this I visited Hopkins, Belize, which is where Hamanasi and Jaguar reef are. I took my three children and husband. I did not intend to stay in Hopkins but when we passed through I saw the beauty and we decided to stop for the day because that was all we could have afforded at these big resorts. I ended up staying for two weeks because this lady rented us her house, which was about forty feet from the beach. The house was empty because she now lives in Dangriga. It was a concrete building
(Belizean style Bungalow) and had two bedrooms, one toilet, kitchen, refrigerator, stove, two beds and a beautiful yard with mango, orange, lemons and coconut trees. She charged us only $100US a day for all five of us combined. SO THAT WAS LIKE $20 A DAY FOR each person. We cooked our own food and saved a lot of money. That was not the end the lady’s husband is a fisherman and he took us to the islands for the whole day to fish and snorkel for $200. Hopkins is beautiful and that nice lady still has that house for rent. It was so cheap we left her a nice tip. Her email is dainagail@yahoo.com
Reply to this CraniOcean thinks you paid waaaaaay too much. 😉 Meanwhile, CraniOcean fully appreciates the beauty and the spectrum of experiences in Guate...this was a specific request re: "gang crime"...You do bring up a good note...On all of CraniOcean's journey in Guate...all were honest. No crime witnessed. See the CraniOcean blog to see how honest even the shoeshine boys were in Antigua (when they did not "have" to be) truly astonishing..that country has turned a corner --the gangs are nothing like what the military was during the wars there, pre 1996. Thanks, useful note.

Has anyone ever done a tour with La Moskitia Ecoaventuras. They have a five day river trip that sounds wonderful. I would really be interested in anyone who has traveled in La Mosquita area.
