Ok, now that I have your attention! My boyfriend and I are planning on traveling for about one year. We hope to leave at the end of December 2009 and return in December of 2010, however neither one of us has any serious obligation to come home too, so that isn't set in stone... We should have about $20,000 US for the two of us (not including fights or any things we need to purchase pre liftoff).

The "iitinerary" will go as follows (maybe, unless I change it for the umpteenth time 😊

NY to Bangkok (End of Dec.)
~Laos (for a day or two)
~Thai Islands (Jan.)
Ko Pha-Ngan for New Year's Eve and Ko Tao, Ko Samui (don't know which order yet)
~Phuket, Thailand (Jan.)
Ko Phi Phi, Krabi, Ko Lanta, Ko Tarutao National Park
(Boat, Bus, or Train?)
Bangkok to Singapore Malaysia (Jan./Feb.)
~Kuala Lumpur
Satun, Pulau Langkawi, Georgetown, Butterworth, Koto Bharu, Pulau Perhentian, Mersing, Pulau Tioman (Places we might want to check out on the way to Singapore)
Singapore to Jakarta Indonesia (Feb.) -How should we get from Jakarta to Bali?
Bali to Tokyo (March)
~Have no idea what we are going to do for that month in Japan
Tokyo to Hong Kong -How should we get from Japan to China? (April)
-Not sure yet what we're going to do in China
Hong Kong to Nepal (April) -How should we get form China into Nepal?
Nepal to India (May) - What part of India is okay weather-wise in May?
-Some sort of train travel around India
India to Ireland (End of May)
-use eurail pass to get around Europe
Ireland (June) , Amsterdam (July), France (August), Italy (Sept.), Greece (Oct.)
-we want travel the coast, pretty much going along the Mediterranean
(Nov./Dec.)- open to whatever place we want to go back to or a new place that has been recommended

I know this is a bit all over the place, what do you think? I've lived in Europe so at this point I'm more curious about advice for the Asia portion of my trip, thanks for anything you've got!

Hello Ali and Will 😊

Is the $20,0000 between the 2 of you? If so, you do have enough but you will need to be careful with your money.

You have on average $54 per day to spend if I calculated correctly. In the less expensive countries spend only half of this per day so that you will have more for the more expensive countries and some to cover visas and airport taxes. Also spending less time in the expensive countries and more in the less expensive ones may be wise.

for that price you guys will need to be very careful with how you spend your money.
for example laos for a day are two should be 2 weeks atleast, your going to have to pay for your laos visa, around 30 if i remember correctly. Laos is an amazing country and very very cheap i'd suggest staying there a month, hit up vang vieng if you do, tubing down a river so much fun.

if your going to be in thailand over a month you have to do a visa run, i suggest the new years even party and such on the islands do all that island stuff for a month then go to laos, then spent some time in the north of thailand, chang mai and such, too many people miss out on the north of thailand.

tokyo and europe are going to me much much more expensive then southeast asia and india. Its a hard change to get used to paying 3 dollars for a full meal to 15, but as long as you budget yourself accordingly you should be alrite

another thing you could think about doing is starting your trip a month earlier at end of oct rahter then end of dec and spending your last 2 free months in the beginign of your trip in southeast asia, cambodia (ankor wat), laos, norhtern thailand and then eventually ending your trip at the end of sept in greece. It's definitely doable but you'll need to find ways to stretch your money. You can do it, but you won't be in 3-5 star hotels every night. Reply to this

wow! cool... Such a long holiday...Just the life that I want.. 😊
You should go to Japan in July if you are into music festival... or Mar-Apr if you want to see the cherry blossom.
From Jakarta to Bali, I think you can take a domestic flight, which will be cheaper compared to International.
Singapore to Malaysia, you can take a bus or a coach.. The journey from Singapore to KL will be around 5 hrs.
Same goes for travelling in between states in Malaysia.. you can take a coach or you can probably rent a car with a driver included to some parts... 😊
Oh, for Singapore, you should prolly come in August cos there'll be a fireworks festival going on.
Same goes for Malaysia as well.. This is to celebrate their National Day.
Hope that helps a lil'...
