We were up early on Friday morning to catch the bus to Puno. Unfortunately it wasn’t private transportation this time and we had to catch a public bus. The bus, however, was a tourist bus so it wasn’t like we had to share with people transporting chickens like my imagination suggested. It was a very nice coach and we had seats right near the middle door. It turned out that rather than just travelling to Puno, we were doing touristy things along the way. I was relaxing, listening to my iPod, when we arrived at the first stop. It was a church in a small town. I didn’t really get what the attraction was, though. Due to my headphones, I missed any information the tour guide gave us on the bus, and inside the church he ... read more

Today was a rough travel day for me. We took a long bus journey through the Andes. The countryside was beautiful. We drove through several small villages outside of Cusco. An interesting aspect of the villages that we drove through which were in the outlying areas of Cusco was that each village was essentially dedicated to a specific commodity for Cusco. For example, one village that we drove through and briefly stopped at, specialized in Chicharrones (Fried Pork Skin - tastier than pork rinds). We also stopped in a village that specialized in pan (bread). The bread was nicely sweet and fresh from the oven. The first place that we stopped for any length was the village of Andahuaylillas. This village is best known for its beautiful baroque 17th-century church dedicated to Saint Peter the Apostle. ... read more

Our Arrival Our bus from Cusco arrived at the terminal in Puno, on the waterfront at 3:50pm. From the terminal we stayed at a Hospedaje on the next street up. Where We Stayed Hospedaje Dulces Suenos - S/20 for a double room with private bathroom. The room was newly done but not in the main building and got freezing at night. No wifi. Where We Ate There was a massive market over several streets when we were there on a Saturday. We got lunch in a restaurant opposite for S/3 each. Positive Bar - just off the main square on Peel St. We needed wifi so got a couple of 650ml beers for S/8. Cozy place. Where We Went Next We used Puno purely as a stopping point to get to Copacabana in Bolivia. We had ... read more

This morning we set off to visit Puno in Peru. We crossed the border in the morning, headed out through all the traffic and made it to Puno just before lunch. Puno is a really nice little town that is on Lake Titicaca. We then went out on a boat to Uros Island. It's not really an island, but a small village built on reeds that float above the water. They also have houses and boats that are also made out of reeds. It is so amazing to see!!!! It is one of my favourite places so far. Then the people on the island welcomed us into their homes and showed us the stuff they were making. After that we tried on their traditional clothing and took funny pictures! We went back to the mainland and ... read more

27 February 2014 Thursday - Puno, Peru We did not expect much of Puno as the guidebooks and internet sites didn’t have much good to say about it, probably because it doesn’t have a clutch of magnificent Spanish colonial Catholic Churches or a bunch of museums or fabulous squares. We were, however, pleasantly surprised on our initial walkabout. One of the criteria we use to make an initial assessment of a town or city is if there are more interesting-looking restaurants than we will have the time to visit during our stay there. Accordingly, Puno looks very promising and under-rated by the travel guides. We had finally arrived at around 2am. We had met a young Belgian couple, Heyvaert and Bernard, who were also on a long-term Latin American journey, while waiting to board the bus ... read more

Alt i alt, alle ... read more

I started day 9 in Cusco, leaving the beautiful Hotel Monasterio early to arrive at the train station in time to board the Andean Explorer train for a ten hour journey to Puno along the shores of Lake Titicaca. The train is built in the 1920's style and comfortably furnished with high-back chairs and large windows for viewing the impressive Andean scenery. There is an observation car in the back to truly reveal the tall mountains, rivers and farmland. The train made a short stop at remote Andean outpost at 14,173 feet elevation. We had a three course lunch on the train served at our tables by a very efficient crew. The train ride was for about 220 miles to get to Puno, a city of 100,000 at an elevation of 12,500 feet. It was dark ... read more

Dragging ourselves out of bed we head for the train station. Instead of staying in Cusco to recover from the fatigue of our trek we have decided to go up market and ride one of the great train journeys of the world - Cusco to Puno. The cost is $150 per person, but what the hell, we need some pampering after the Inca trail. I have booked the tickets online and have printed them out so no mistake can be made but on presentation to the conductor he informs us that the tickets are for reverse travel - from Puno to Cusco and to make matters worse this leg of the journey is another $100. He whisks us off to the ticket office to see what can be done. The ticket officer informs us that seats ... read more

16th of August Day 4: Chivay to Colca Canyon to Puno Well here we are in Puno after a very long day. We started the day Chivay in the Colca Valley. After a 6:00 am our guide and driver took us to the 'Cruz del Condor', a natural viewpoint opposite the nesting-sites of the famous Andean Condors. We arrive in time to see these majestic birds launch themselves into the Canyon as they set out on their day's hunt. Both the birds and the canyon are spectacular. At this location the canyon is 1,200 metres deep. I got a couple of shots of the Condors but nothing like what Don got so I will down load his pictures and load them to the blog when I can. After spending more time in the Canyon, we returned ... read more
