Well, dinner last night with our new friends was fun. It was nice to be able to see them again before parting ways. We talked a lot about theatre. These boys have had quite the performance stints... including Puccini's La Boheme on Broadway! Right up my alley... Anyways, we were VERY happy to awaken this morning and hear cars on the street. This meant we would be able to get to the airport and make our flight to Puerto Maldonado. We arrived at the airport around 9am. Our flight wasn't until 10:20 so we had lots of time... except that we didn't, and actually got lucky. Our flight time was apparently changed and we had no idea. It was bumped up to 7:20. We think maybe they sent us an email about it, but since we ... read more

Day 17: After the highs of Machu Picchu, the transfer back to Cusco didnt get us back into town until almost dusk.... by the time we went to bed, we'd already been up a whole 24 hours. So it was rather lucky that we had a free day in Cuzco the following day, a bit of a lay in, a lazy breakfast, laundry as i'd almost totally ran out of clean clothes. And just wandering around Cuzco city which in the midst of everything is actually a beautiful, vibrant town. Suvenior shopping for the girls and lazy lunches. We had our final night in Cuzco by going out for dinner at "Fallen Angels" which is a beautiful restaurant. I had steak cooked in its own juices yum, and after hardly any sleep the past week, what ... read more

Hello everyone, I'm not going to even bothering apologising for being so useless at updating this blog; surely you've all noticed the pattern emerging by now! What I will do is try to write you a nice, long and meaty post to make up for it. Now, where to start...ah, yes. Puerto Maldonado. Last time I wrote I was sitting in a hostel room enjoying the fan and TV with three bot flies growing in my head and feeling somewhat ill. I am currently sitting in a hostel room enjoying the fan and TV with three small lumps on my head where the bot flies had been growing in my head and feeling rather ill. Don't you love how history repeats itself. More on that later. After a few days in PM, Mini and Gideon managed ... read more

... read more

Hola amigos, It’s been a while, and I have been many places. I’ve written this entry on a bus, in Cusco airport, under my mosquito net at Lagunas Surf Camp in Mancora, which is just south of the Ecuadorian border, during my cruise cabin in the Galapagos Islands, and now back in Quito. My days have been full enough that on numerous occasions I have found myself lying in a bed thinking, “Have I slept here before? Was I here last night?” My Bolivian experience was like that, which was unfortunate, because I liked it there. I live without schedules as much as possible, but other people’s schedules can sometimes drive my decisions. My first morning in Copacabana, Bolivia, I began researching tours of the Peruvian jungle and saw that they all departed on Sundays. I ... read more

When they say the roar of the jungle, I now understand what they mean. We slept for 3 nights in a lodge set deep in the rainforest, right on the banks of Lake Sandoval, called Sandoval Lake Lodge. During these nights we were aided to sleep by the many fascinating and sometimes quite disturbing, noises of the rainforest. You would not believe what sounds can come out of such tiny insects, fragile looking birds and sweet looking monkeys. A racket that is what! A good kind of racket though, not like the disco on the other side of the wall we experienced in Lima. The sounds of the rainforest are definitely more soothing than those of some drunken Peruvians attempting karaoke that is for sure! One particular noise I was fascinated by was coming from the ... read more

Due to messing up the dates of our flight from Puerto Maldanado to Cusco, we ended up staying in this extremely humid rainforest town for two painful yet comical nights. Luckily, or so we thought, we ended up in a pretty nice lodge set on the river called Wasaii lodge. We were promised great views and best of all.... air conditioning! Air conditioning was one of the first disasters we had. Our room we were steeply paying $60 per night for had air con, but it managed to conk out on our first night so we were literally sweltering in the morning as the heat quickly rose. Due to Puerto Maldanado having nothing to offer outside except aimlessly wandering the streets in unbearable heat, we knew we had to do something about this as we were ... read more

The Amazon Trip Tuesday 13th Left Cuzco at 6am to fly to Puerto Maldonaldo and then our group of 16 enjoyed a 3.5 hour motorised canoe trip up the Amazon to the Libertador Tambopata Eco Lodge. The scenery along the banks of the river was great with palm trees and banana trees plus lots of other tropical vegetation. We spotted caiman, heron, the largest rodents in the world (can’t remember its name), plus lots more. The Lodge was great. We all had our own rooms, 2 per bungalow, under a thatched vaulted roof with hot showers (heated by solar panels), and we had mosquito nets over our beds. It was clean and atmospheric. There was no electricity except between 6pm and 7pm when the generator was on so you could charge batteries etc….so the rooms, pathways, ... read more

Buenos Nochas Blog Readers! So this is our final blog of this incredible journey. We´ve found a really nice hostel in Lima (just down the road from the Stop and Drop Inn but a hundred times better!). We´ve just found out that the airport charges a 92 Soles tax on anybody going on international flights so to save us having to withdraw any money from an ATM (which costs about $5 a time) we´re saving our pennies big time! It should be possible to get through tomorrow on the money we have though! We landed in Puerto Maldonado airport on Monday and picked up by the owners of the Anaconda Jungle Lodge - Donald and Waddi. The lodge was absolutely amazing. It was honestly paradise and we´re so jealous of the owners lives! They have about ... read more
