Voyage to Oz

Andy and Liz

Andy & Liz are exploring the world on their way to Australia. We flew to Rio De Janeiro on 2 October, followed 5 days later by a trip to Lima in Peru before we head off to explore the Inca Trail and Maccu Piccho and the Amazon. We then head to Washington DC before stopping in LA on our way to Fiji for a chill out week. Next we head to the Gilbert Islands (Tarawa, Kiribati) where Liz lived when she was between 6 and 9. Finally we head into Sydney on 4 November for a week before picking up our campervan for 5 weeks adventure on the Oz east coast.

Oz Week 4 - up to Brisbane Tuesday 24th November Keen to get going we headed over to Port Fairy (what a name!) for brunch (Liz had the best Eggs Benedict ever at one of the cafés) and then travelled back towards Melbourne via Geelong and then a further four hours north up the Hume Highway to Wangeratta where we stayed in a nice campsite next to a river. Whilst we were aiming to put in lots of miles (or should that be km here in Oz?) you do feel like needing a break after 7 hours driving so we were thankful to get to the campsite around 7pm. Wednesday 25th November Another big drive day as we were planning to get up to Brisbane in two days time. However we took a bit of a ... read more

Oz Week 1 - Sydney Wednesday 4 November Arrival in Sydney, although it was British weather that greeted us along with Tim with a Devon flag and a ‘Welcome to Australia’ goodie bags. We had a quick tour of Sydney before Tim dropped us at our hotel, the Menzies (which was very central) and headed back to work. We met up with Tim for a drink at the Lord Nelson pub and then a meal at the Harbourview Hotel in the Rocks, where we enjoyed kangaroo steak. Thursday 5 November Trying to be organised we had a pre arranged meeting with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, so even though it took an hour of filling in forms we left with 2 new pre ordered bank cards with our names on and 2 new bank accounts, even ... read more

Thursday 29th Tarawa, Kiribati (The Gilbert Islands) We had to leave at 2.15am to get to Nadi to get our flight to Tarawa, Kiribati. After a 2 hour 45 minute flight on Air Pacific we arrived at Bonriki Airport on Tarawa. It hadn’t changed in 26 years since Liz was last there. Children were running along side the runway waving at the plane….the odd pig was also trundling alongside the runway too! As we walked across the tarmac to the Arrivals lounge the heat and humidity hit us…..it was 30 C with 100% humidity and only 8.35am! It felt like the oven door had been opened and not been shut! We got our luggage and found our transport in the minibus to the Otintaai Hotel (pronounced O-sin- tie). Again driving past the fish farms and the ... read more

Thursday 22nd October in Fiji, The Coral Coast We arrived at Nadi airport at 4.50am and got given shell necklaces and greeted by a Fijian band. After an hour and a half minibus ride to our resort, the Warwick, on the coral coast, we began to chill out over a big breakfast buffet, with views across the turquoise lagoon to the breakers crashing on the reef. Yes, we had made it to paradise. The resort was nicely landscaped and the rooms were high standard with hardwood polished floors, massive walk-in showers and satellite TV (not that we are watching much - just BBC world). Lots of fish can be seen in the crystal clear lagoon…along with crabs and eels and star fish….and the resort had its own little island which has a restaurant on. We have ... read more

Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th Oct Having flown across the US it really gives you an idea on how big a country it is, seeing lakes, vast plains and the Rocky Mountains. After some much needed rest Tuesday 20th was spent exploring Hollywood where our hotel was based and then touring bits of LA such as Bel Air, Beverly Hills and the famous Hollywood sign. The tour showed great views across LA from the side of the hill and there were various houses of famous actors and actresses, as well as the expensive shopping area of Rodeo Drive where soft top Rolls Royces where parked up outside exclusive jewellery shops, where you can only enter by prior appointment. With the main studios such as Warner Brothers being only 5 minutes away it was also good to ... read more

Friday 16th Another travelling day with flights from Lima, to Panama City and then onto Washington. We flew by the entrance to the Panama Canal and saw all the boats lining up for the trip through. Panama City looked quite impressive with lots of sky-scapers. We got to DC and our hotel, the Washington Plaza, at 3.30am!!….and were very glad to crash out in very, very comfy beds. Saturday 17th It seemed the Welsh weather had caught us up and decided it was going to rain all day. Nevertheless we walked 15 minutes from the hotel to the White House and went on a tour of the gardens there. We walked right in front of the Oval Office and because it had lights on inside we could see who was there…it was President Obama himself showing ... read more

The Amazon Trip Tuesday 13th Left Cuzco at 6am to fly to Puerto Maldonaldo and then our group of 16 enjoyed a 3.5 hour motorised canoe trip up the Amazon to the Libertador Tambopata Eco Lodge. The scenery along the banks of the river was great with palm trees and banana trees plus lots of other tropical vegetation. We spotted caiman, heron, the largest rodents in the world (can’t remember its name), plus lots more. The Lodge was great. We all had our own rooms, 2 per bungalow, under a thatched vaulted roof with hot showers (heated by solar panels), and we had mosquito nets over our beds. It was clean and atmospheric. There was no electricity except between 6pm and 7pm when the generator was on so you could charge batteries etc….so the rooms, pathways, ... read more

Wednesday 7th We arrived in Lima on Andy´s Birthday after flying across the Andes with some beautiful snow topped mountains.....and then in Lima we had a wander around Miraflores (the posh neighbourhood) taking in the funky coloured buildings and sampling some of Peru´s culinary delights. Thursday 8th Having arrived in Peru we wanted to make use of our full day in Lima, so headed off early to the zoo, which had a good selection of local and international animals. We went early, which worked out well as it wasn’t too busy for what turned out to be a Peruvian national holiday! We saw Amazonian animals, Tapiers (warthogs with elephant trunks) and a jaguar, plus lots of macaws and parrots (as well as the usual, lions, bears, giraffes etc.).When we had finished and came out of the ... read more

Friday 2 October 2009 - Well the day had finally arrived and after some packing and repacking (due to suitcases being a little too heavy!) we set off from Tiverton, Devon with Sally & Neville (the Mundy’s senior). We met up in Windsor in Brown’s for a farewell late lunch with both sets of parents, Liz’s sister and husband as well as little Christopher, who did a very good job of stealing the attention, and also Lyn, our good friend, popped along. After this we headed over to Heathrow with both sets of parents and after another a set of ‘au revoirs’ we headed through the gates for the evening flight on TAM airline (very good service we thought - good food, friendly, attentive air stewardesses, and great selection of movies/TV on demand)... On Saturday 3rd ... read more
