I gotta say I am really enjoying being here in Chiclayo! The weather is beautiful - 70´s most of the time, clean, fresh air and clean streets too! And they have mototaxis here! Yippy! Not nearly as many as there were in Iquitos, but I still get to enjoy riding. More taxis here though, but less air pollution then in Lima. I would also like to add that the "hombres" in Chiclayo are better-looking overall then all of the other places we have visited in Perú! Soooo, today we began our observations at the military academy, Colegio Militar Elias Aguirre. Had to dress a little nicer for this visit- couldn´t get away with the new cargo pants I bought last night! I will probably wear them for most of the next couple weeks though- soooo ... read more

Oy, lots to share and it´s already 11:00pm... can´t get to sleep too late tonight either. Long day ahead tomorrow! Here we go! Day 17 started with a busride (in our tour bus) to an archaelogical museum, Museo Arqueologico Nacional Bruning, which offered a collection of ancient Peruvian artifacts from the pre-Incan period through the Incan period. As we were leaving the museum, we had another opportunity to see the local protestors, marching in the streets and escorted by the local police. For more information on the current strike in Perú, visit Peruprotests Off to lunch at El Rincón del Pato, where I had my first and last taste of tortilla de raya, or stingray tortilla. A little fishy for me. I did, however, enjoy the Cocktail de Algarrobina, a drink made from carob. For the ... read more

Wake-up time at 5:30am today... yeeech! But the bus was coming to take us to the airport at 6am, right? Not exactly... The tiny little van arrived at about 6:20, and there wasn´t a snowball´s chance in hell we were all going to fit on the van with the luggage. Soooo, we divided into two groups, I was in the first group. Headed to the airport and got there at about 6:45. (Our flight was scheduled to leave at 7:35) The second group was right behind us, or so we thought. Now it´s 7:00am, and they are closing the check-in counters. Group two still hadn´t arrived. And Natalie was in group two, with the bag of snacks! (aka my breakfast) 7:15, no sign of them. 7:30... 7:45.... boarding the plane, and no group two! The next ... read more

Headed to the pre-Incan site of Sipan this morning in a rather intersting mini-van which seems to be the main form of public transport here. The site is still being excavated but the workers seem to have no problem stopping to talk to the tourists. Only Spanish speaking guides so we just went round reading the boards although the person who wrote them had an interesting grasp of English to say the least. It was actually easier to translate the Spanish than to try and decipher the English! The grave sites had been left with replicas of the bodies and treasures that had been found so you get some idea of how it looked. The finds are in the Sipan museum in Lambayeque. No idea why they're not in a museum in Sipan or even ... read more

Paul really wanted to be in 2 countries for his birthday but we didn't quite make it. We spent most of the day in another bus. We caught the bus and we were the only 2 on it and we were still commenting on how could a bus company make money on an empty bus when we pulled into another bus station and had to change onto another one that was nearly full. The bus waited 45 minutes until all the seats were taken before it left. During that time men came on board and tried to sell watches and sunglases and kids were selling soya milk and black maize drinks in pre/used fizzy bottles. As we travelled up, up, up rocky mountains and down into the most amazingly fertile valley with a tropical microclimate the ... read more

Another day, another bus trip - this one just a short trip up the road to Chiclayo. We passed many acres of sugar cane and asparagus. The asparagus is white and picked before it comes above ground, it is all canned and exported and it is all irrigated by canals, because we are still in the desert. We stayed at a Hotel, right by the main Plaza. We arrived before lunch, so no exhaustion today so we felt it worth a try to catch a collectivo a short trip up the road to Lambayeque. At this town are two very interesting museums, the first we visited was the Brunning Museum. We thought we had struck it lucky when we were let in for no charge, until we got inside and were surrounded by hundreds of school ... read more

Once the hassle of the previous day was out of our system we headed to the Museum of Sipan which was the main reason for coming here. An intact Moche, pre Incan civilisation tomb was discovered in 1987 of Lord Sipan and lots of priceless artifacts were recovered. The attraction for me was something so important was found so late in the century when most of the world’s treasures have been found. It just goes to show how much we don’t know and that there can be buried treasures right under our feet in a number places around the world. Since a kid I have imagined what it must have been like for the early explores to Egypt finding all these tombs and thought those days have passed but maybe there are still chances to unearth ... read more

What a day and deserves lots of swear words. We planned a very long day of travelling as were trying to get to Chiclayo in Peru about 600 km away for a reasonable time. We were on our first bus at 5am for a 5 hour journey to the border, I hate getting up early for border crossings as you always end up knackered all day and from experience you always need to be very aware as everybody is on the make and trying there best to rip you off. The bus we were on was a decent bus and when we got close to the border the driver stopped at immigration and was nice enough to wait as we were the only gringos on the bus. They usually kick you out and leave you to ... read more

Im now sitting in ann inernetshop in Monsefu, a busy village southeast of Chiclayo. This village boost some nice craftshops, local craft was what i came here to see, but what turned out to be the most interresting is the local peoplelife, and tonight there is supposedly some sort of fiesta here. Ok. Lets start with the beginning. My point of arrival to the continent was Lima-capital of Peru. A noisy, polluted city, witch on top of that is huge and caotic. Getting the general bearings is relatively straight forward-even for me witch has a great talent of getting lost in any place with more than one street. Getting detailed bearings isn´t easy, though. But thanks to "mamma" in Inka Homestay, i got all directions. She doesen´t speak a word english-so my spanish learningcureve was steep....That ... read more

We all met up South America » Peru » Chiclayo By Elmo AbbeyApril 11th 2007Abbey ElliottThey made it!!!!! Tom and Russ, well done boys they travel for 51 hours on coaches, both seem to have a bit of jet lag. We have just been to see the 26 old mud pyramids in Tucume they cover over 200 ha. We really cool, but had to watch out for the thorns, they tended to go through the bottom of your shoe. (my fault for wearing accessorise flip-flops, think I might have to get a new pair after that ordeal) All is good here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... read more
