I flew down from Quito to Lima late Wednesday evening and after a little hiccup of going to the wrong hotel I checked in and met my new room mate, Vicky. The next morning we got up and had breakfast with a couple of other guys from the group and changed money into sols which is the Peruvian currency. Then we caught a taxi to the old town. The ride took about thirty minutes from the hotel and the driving and traffic was crazy! When we got there me and Vicky walked around the main square then went to the monastry. We saw lots of art and artefacts and the catacombs which was really cool. They reckon up to 75,000 bodies were buried under the church and you can see all the bones and the tombs. ... read more

Today we went out on a boat tour of the Islas Ballestas and then drove/walked aroundthe national reserve. It was awesome. On the boat portion we saw dolpins, sea lions and birds all feeding on a school of fish. We even got to see adorable penguins just waddling and hoppin' along! The park was incredible. Apparently they mine salt there, and half of the dunes are salt not sand. It gives the whole thing this incredible sparkle, but looks like you're in the middle of a desert. Then, to make it even more awesome, the whole thing is surrounded by bays and oceans. Depending on where you are you can see nothing but salty sand, or water on every side. A very neat effect. Now we're waiting in our hostal to catch our bus to Nazca. ... read more

As our group was checking into our upper-scale hotel in Pisco, Yolanda was settling in for another cold, dark night in the desert town of Chincha. As we compared our success (or lack thereof) with hot water in the shower, Yolanda and her family may not have had any water at all. As I smiled with surprise at having an indoor bathroom with tile, Yolanda may have been walking outside in the dark to hers. Would she trip in the dark and fall into the wells that used to collect water (when it actually came)? Doubtful. Yoland and her family have lived in the poor squatter area outside of Chincha for many years now. They have lived in the dry, sandy desert longer than I have been alive...and long before the earthquake of August 15, 2007 ... read more

So we got up early, ready to move on from Lima, unfortunately, as we were pleasantly surprised by the city we'd heard pretty negative things about. But it's only the beginning of our adventure and we got places to go and people to meet. And perhaps our time in Lima was up anyway as we dodged death just minutes later - walking out into the garden heading for the kitchen, a huge pane of glass came crashing down literally 5 feet from us. Transpired that the windows in the hostel aren't very well fitted and someone simply lent on the pane, sending it flying down onto the ground below. Luckily no one was hurt but the person responsible looked super sheepish, that's for sure. So, having packed and paid up, we took the bus to Pisco, ... read more

Sand. A lot of it. Pretty much everywhere, including all over my teeth. Today, I went sandboarding just outside Pisco. And it was amazing! I caught a buggy with my group out to the sand dunes and then across them. Better than the best rollercoster I have ever been on! And I screamed a little bit too much on the really steep ones. It got a bit scary sometimes. When we stopped at the first big dune, they got out the boards which were so small! I´m so used to seeing massive surf boards, that I was not expecting such to see such tiny things. They told me that the first slope was the smallest and if I were to do any, I should give this one a go. So after everyone had had a go, ... read more

Ok, so Peru isn't exactly known for its wine. In fact, it is known for Pisco (though Chileans will argue that they make it best). Pisco is an alcohol that slightly resembles tequila and makes the infamous drink, "pisco sour." If you go to the small town of Pisco (near Ica), you can go to Pisco distilleries and try various types of the alcohol. You can also take a trip to Ica to try the wine from that region. I'm warning you though - Ica is where the huge earthquake hit in 2007 and is still in shambles - a very sad story. However, if you want to try the "best" Peruvian wine, it's the place to be. (The wine has a unique 'sweet' taste to it - it's very hit or miss, some people love ... read more

Pisco - 7:00am I am still struggling to get a solid night´s sleep over here - I´m not sure if it´s all the noise (car horns beeping, dogs barking, roosters crowing, etc - or if it´s to do with having a heightened alertness to ensure that I respond quickly to situations of attempted kidnapping, theft or earthquake. It´s about 7:30am when most of the group board a bus to take us to a little port town where we will then board a boat to take us to the Ballestas Islands - those staying behind have been or will go to the Galapagos. The Ballestas Islands are a group of three islands that have an abundance of wildlife, mostly birds, and an absence of humans due to the lack of their being any fresh water as there ... read more

Again, I am tired but this time it´s due to the amount of activites rather than the changing times and dates! We are now in Pisco which was about a 4 hour drive from Lima. Despite the somewhat smaller population size and less ´refined´streets and public areas, the now familiar sounds of car horns and car alarms is still an ever present, constant noise! Earlier today, set out from ´Hostal Pukara´via public bus (!) to the city heart of Lima. The bus ride itself was an eye opener - or closer depending on the situation. Not only did we frequently and narrowly avoid colliding with other vehicles, mostly buses, but driving along the main road highlighted the extent of those that have and those that have not - so many beggars and the quality of homes ... read more
