Arrived at 5am in Nazca, and as the rooms were not ready, we watched the Nazca Lines video, very informative, ate breakfast and relaxed by the pool before our flight. Nice warm weather as getting nearer the equator! We took to the air, at 12.55pm in a light aircraft to see the Nazca lines. There were great views of mountainous scenery and we saw various shapes including the astronaut (sometimes described as an alien), Condor, and geometric shapes, but unfortunately not the monkey. Amazingly these shapes have survived all the various earthquake waves. Lots of dipping and diving in the air, in a noisy light aircraft. Spread over 500 km of arid land the Nazca lines are a mystery to their creation. Some believe they were an astronomical calendar, while others suggest they are ritual walkways, ... read more

ok...so didnt get a chance to update yester day so here it goes... omg...yesterday was the best day ever!!!! we left lima at 5am and we started our adventure to paracas. we arrived at paracas at 9am. we took a 2hr boat ride around the sourouding islands. we saw kindof like a nazca line but it was used to direct pirates and to tell fishermen where to fish being that they had no maps. then we continued to another island. we saw real life boobies (penguins) and sea lions. it was absolutely amazing! when do u get a chance to see these things when u are not in a zoo! i couldnt believe that i was seeing these animals in their natural habitat. we rode around the island and saw thousands of thousands of birds. they ... read more

so im doing this journal entry alittle late again so here it goes: today we went on the airplane to see the nazca lines. let me tell u...i sat in front thank god...we think because i am a blonde and i was wearing pig tails. i heard it was really hot in the back of the plane and i sat in the front where there was a vent. out of the 5 students that were on the pane (it was only a 6 person plane) 2 of them puked! i gave my barf bag up so josemarie could puke some more. so i was just counting the number of lines we had left until we landed at the airport! the lines were cool but you really really really had to concentrate. and the pilot had broken ... read more

So I had a 14 hour night bus ride from Cusco to Nasca, on the Peruvian coast on the Pacific ocean. In the UK I guess this might take you from London to Edinburgh and back! Whilst I was dreading the journey it actually passed by really quite well and I needed the rest. I woke up at 7am Monday morning to an amazing sight out the bus window. It was the Nasca desert, full of undulating sandy coloured rock (see picture). This atypical Monday morning view made me realise why I was travelling. It was a good feeling. Its nice to wonder what´s gonna be out the window when you wake up the next morning. Nasca. There´s not much to see in Nasca other than the mysterious Nasca Lines. Spread across 500 sq km ... read more

Ever since throwing a lot of money at a very silly but fun bicycle, I've been in the knowing of those mysterious Nazca lines. So it always was shortlisted as a destination. Having spoken to other travellers around as well, we also knew that like many other small peruvian cities, there would not be many other reasons to actually stay very long in the city of Nazca! No surprises there. So, after stretching the Huacachina stay untill Thursday morning, and knowing we already had bus tickets from Nazca to Cusco for Friday night, it would leave us with little over 24 hours in town to do our thing(s)! So after arriving at 1pm at the hostel (Brabant), and having a chat with our host about tours, we set out for some lunch and some more info, ... read more

Our return to Lima was kept brief, as we spent just the one night there before catching a bus early the following morning for Nazca. The 9 hour journey down to Nazca didn´t run too smoothly. After 6 hours of seriously erratic driving through a largely barren landscape, the bus pulled over, the driver jumped out along with a couple of ransoms and started fiddling with the rear back wheel. Not exactly being mechanically minded, I couldn’t make out what the were trying to do, but after a few frustrating hours of guessing what the problem was and whether we’d ever actually make it to Nazca, the problem seemed to be resolved using a wedge shaped piece of wood found by the roadside (answers on a postcard). We rocked up in the largely unremarkable, dusty ... read more

I thought I'd already published a journal on this but I can't find it, maybe I deleted it or something. After a couple of days recuperating in Arequipa we got the bus to Nazca, mistakenly Martin thought it was only a 5 hour trip, but I´d done my reserch and knew it was 12, and thought he did, so I didn't query it. He wasn't too chuffed when we arrived in Nazca at 1 in the morning. Ever there to help was a Peruivan tout, bless him, and we agreed to go and have a look at his hostal, it was lovely, apart from the fact he introduced us to his friend who tried to sell us a flight over the Nazca lines, which would leave in about 6 hours. We politely, as we could to ... read more

written by Miss Wendy O Astronomical calendars, ritual walkways, giant running tracks, extraterrestrial landing sites or a shamans´dreams brought on by hallucinogenic drugs .... Who knows, but impressive all the same. Stuart and I took a short flight to check out these gigantic elaborate designs etched into the desert surface from the air. It is theorized that these lines were made by the Paracas and Nazca cultures from 900BC to 600AD. While I spent the majority of the 30min ride staring at the horizon praying I wouldn't vomit while the pilot tipped the aircraft from side to side to point out different figures, Stuart took some pretty kool pictures .... check them out..... ... read more

Nazca: Some of you may have heard of the famous Nasca Lines. Funny animal like shapes engraved into the land only visible from the air- yes more small propeller planes like travelling last time, not good. But the Monkey, Hummingbird, Frog, Condor etc were impressive if not truly bizarre, even if I couldnt pay them my full attention for the fear. The post flight display was even better, almost getting arrested AGAIN! This time for "not paying airport tax," which our operator, (in hindsight just a dodgy man called Stephen) said was included. Should have known when our driver to the airfield looked like he had 2 glass eyes! Nick on principle voices our refusal and sure enough "the Mayor" as he liked to call himself has the police at our hotel before you know it. ... read more

We have arrived in Ecuador, and the prospect of another new country is exciting. Quito, the capital, seems a good base for our travels, and I have had a kind of a crazy first day. Callum has fallen sick with the flu unfortunately, so was temporarily bed bound while I explored Quito in search of a launderette. I am sure you may have noticed before…… following maps and generally having bearings is not my strongest point. I set off baring two large rubbish bags of filthy clothes, and surprise surprise 30 minutes later, the plastic bags had split open, undies were flying, and I was red faced and frustrated! Ahhh, the conveniences of having a washing machine AND a dryer in our own homes, something I will never take for granted again!!! One deep breath, ... read more
