- FOOD: Breakfast at the HI (yes, I set foot in the place). - AREA: So pretty set in the middle of sand dunes the height of mountains (as steep as mountains too I discovered when climbing up them to go sand boarding). Speeding down the sand dunes on your bum and looking like a sand monster at the end of it. 2 hours in Lima - my impressions were BIG city, lots of neon lights and busy. - PEOPLE: Gringo city. But nice Gringos who let me hang out with them. Sucker hostel man who is taken in by a smile. - WEATHER: The joy of the hot sun (not such a joy when climbing the dunes) Tue 28th June: I slept for hours. It's so nice to be in a warm place at last! ... read more

As yesterday was the last full day with our group members, we felt it was cause to celebrate. We picked up about 50 soles in alcohol... which in Peru amounts to 2 bottles of wine, a bottle of sambuca, and a bottle of baileys. We started "celebrating" at 10:00 PM, 2 hours later we were all out of alcohol and were being pestered by the hotel staff for making too much noise. It was a good time had by all. Next morning I woke up bright an early, as the body detected the alcohol needed to be returned promptly at 5:30 AM. At around 10:00 AM we said our goodbyes to Sam, our tour leader from G.A.P. He pointed us in the right direction and we were off to the bus station. We picked up ... read more

Hello again. After Cusco we moved on to the most famous, but relatively untouristy town of Nasca (or Nazca - Those alternate spellings, again!) We took a 14-hour overnight bus on a road that did not have one section of straight roadway. It was 14 hours of non-stop twisting and turning. We have our small daybag which on long buses I keep on the ground with the strap around my leg. It just kept sliding back and forth, back and forth for the whole drive. Needless to say, we now know why so many people fly from Cusco to Lima. We arrived in Nasca about 8:00 am. Unfortunately, we were the only ones getting off. That meant that the dozen "jaladores" waiting for the bus all wanted to "help" us out. "Taxi, hotel, tours, flights, ... read more

hey all, all i can say about huacachina is that its a little unknown paradise, a perfect way to end our trip - i love it! i even got to go sandboarding, which is incredibly hard but the landing is softer than snow. just perfect! --dan-- So..we ended up climbing the highest sand dune - of course! In the dark so we saw the town by night which was stunning.. we also attempted to do it by day (dans wishes of course) but the sand was too hot (and apparently I got my way! hehe!) The sand dune buggy ride was absolutely awesome, as was watching Dan sand board with style! We managed to drag ourselves away from Huacachina to spend a day at 3 wineries - all insisting that it was obligatory to try almost ... read more

The last leg of our trip is going to be spent lazily at Huacachina - what we like to think is our untouched little paradise. Surrounded by huge sand dunes, this little lagoon is a Peruvian holiday destination filled with locals, with the only gringos in sight being backpackers really. On arrival I could barely contain my excitement - time to finally put away my beanie and big jacket, key neccessities in Cusco! Meanwhile, Dan was itching to climb to the top of the sand dune at midday - 'yes now, no its not hot at all, and you know we have to climb the biggest one, or it just won´t be the same!´ So we spent that afternoon in the hostel's happening pool, on a hammock, and climbing the 2nd highest dune (after extensive negotiation ... read more

Tuesday afternoon we caught a bus down to Huacachina, a small oasis town outside of Ica. It was really good to finally be out of Lima and actually on the road to La Paz in Bolivia. Huacachina's surrounded by massive sand dunes that you don't want to climb more than once, but the views from the top are worth it. As soon as we got there we headed straight up the dune that was behind our hostel. The sun was setting very fast so we had to move it or else it would set before we got to the top. It was ridiculously hard going, everytime you´d take a step foward, you would slide back half a step in the sand. I finally got to the top just as the sun was setting, as you can ... read more
