We arrived in Cusco on Tuesday 2nd December and this is the place where most people start there Inca Trail adventure. This section of our trip would last 8 days altogether where we would have 2 days in Cusco and then 4 days for the Inca Trail and Macha Picchu and then 2 days back in Cusco.
Our first day in Cusco was pretty short because we arrived in the afternoon but the first thing we did was visit some hill which was a view point of Cusco which was pretty impressive and also you couldnt help but notice the big white statue of Jesus Chrict approx 30 m which watched over Cusco.
Tuesday 2nd December - Day 1
Cusco is a really big city with beautiful streets to walk around and every kind of restaurant you want. It´s full of tourists, more so than locals which means it is a real party town to visit. The first night we went to (where else) an irish bar called Paddy´s which served the best food and also had a great happy hour which we made full use of. 2 cuba libres for 15 soles = less than $5 and the measures where
very big. We ordered more than one, After that we headed outside and where stopped by loads of club owners to go to there bar...Stefano managed to get himself a free salsa lesson with own instructor and free drink...I really don´t know how he does it. The rest of us headed to a bar called Mushroom where we got some free drinks and then played pool. By the end of that we were all quite pissed but in true trallevers fashion instead of heading home we headed to anoither bar called Mama Africa which again we got loads of free booze and busted shapes on the dancefloor.
Wednesday 3rd December - Day 2
In Cusco was a quite one because we had to prepare for the next day which was an earaly start for the Inca Trail.
Inca Trail Thursday 4th December - Day 1
Stefano, myself and the rest of the group where all up at 5 am today to start our Inca Trail adventure and we were all so excited. The first day was a pretty easy day all things considered, we started at 2750m and trekked for 6 hrs before we made it to our camp site
which was at 3000m. A few members of the group found it tough but generally no problems. At camp we all had a beer each to celebrate Day 1 and a job well done on the Inca Trail.
Friday 5th December - Day 2
Everyone in the group was worried about day 2 of the Inca Trail because so many people told us it was the hardiest day. The guide also told us and said Day 1 was a warm compared to this...and he was right. It was a 1 km hike up the mountain which really stretched the group out. The fitter members of the group set off and managed to complete the trek in approx 3 hrs (ya Stefano was one of them...) while the rest of us struggled a little bit took alot longer and used the excuse that we where taking in the beautiful scenary...it was pretty tough!!! We hiked to the highest point which was Warmiwanucca at 4200m and then hiked down to Runkurqay to 3600m where we camped for the night,
Saturday 6th December - Day 3
This was a beautiful day for all of us, compared to day 2 this was a stroll
in the park. We set off from camp at approx 7am like everyday with a slight climb and visited our first ecological site called Runkuraqay (same as camp site) which was basically ruins that had been preserved over the years and showed where people used to live. After that we again climbed a few hundred metres to the highest point and then started our desent to our Second ecological site Sayacmarca which was much bigger and and more impressive. We sent time walking around and when the mist cleard we managed to get sight of more ruins in the distance which made for great photos. After lunch (and after we discoverd that Debbie could communicate with Turkeys...) we set off for our camp site which was called Winaywayma at 2650m. I dont know what I had for lunch but I was enjoying this trauil so much and powering down the trail...I think I was on drugs...oh ya ans i saw a porter full of the side of the cliff and it looked well painful. Thankfully he just smiled and continued. By the way up until this point we had no showers available and everyone was smelly and sweaty so while
Stefano had a cold shower I opted for a wet wipe shower which was just as good. This was now the night before we were to visit Macha Puicchu and we all settled down for dinner and surprising loads of beers.
Sunday 7th December - Day 4 Macha Picchu
Today was an early early start and breakfast was at 4.20am and then we headed to the entry point for Machu Picchu. We quened for 40 minutes to be the first group in and while waiting we got bored so Paul 3 stroke and Corky started a farting contest to keep us entertained. Today was the only day of the trail that it rained but that didnt matter as everyone was so pumped up. Stefano and Corky ran the whole way and didnt wait at the meeting point because clearly they know more than the guide and didnt need them!!! The rest of us met at the meeting point INTIPUNKU which was the start of Machu Picchu but unfortunately at that time of the morning it was so cloudy and misty we couldnt see anything. We trekked another 20 mins downhill to the actual site and our guide talked us through
some history. By late morning the mist had cleared up and so in our infinite wisdom as if the last 4 days hadnt been enough we didnt to climb Wanapicchu which was the mountain next to Machu Picch and and see the views from the air. This was an absolutely horrible climb and took approx 40mins of hell...but the sense of achivement and the views from the top where spectaular! By midday we had to catch the bus out of Machu Picchu and our Inca Trail adventure was over...well not rerally because I didnt mention the 24hr challenge yet!!! Ya basically we got up at 4am this morning and the challenge was to make it back to Cusco and then go out on the town and party, drink and dance until at least 4am the next day. From our group of 23 only 8 survived. We hit the usual spots including Paddys for 2-4-1 drinks and then a new bar called Mythology which basically we took over cos there was 25 of us! Stefano did his usual Michael Jackson dance off and also the worm which impressed everyone...espically Paul 3 stroke who affectionatly called him a wanker!!! The drinks where
flowing and I spent most of the evening dancing on the bar with others...mainly because I was afraid if I tried to get down I would fall so staying in the same place was safe. After Mythology (approx) 4am we went back to Mama Africa for drinks and a little dance...but this didnt last too long as we all crashed!
Monday 8th December - Day 3 Back in Cusco
Everyone woke up late feeling tired and hungover. The boys including Me, Stefano, Doug, Corky and Sanjay went to the real McCoy about lunchtime for a real English breakfast and or English Roast. This really did the trick! Today was really relaxed day and in the evening we went to a bar called Indigo for 2-4-1 drinks and the best Mojitos ever which were well cheap and we smoked a shisha.
