The spectacular scenery of the Cordilleras Blanca near Huaraz
Published: June 3rd 2011South America » Peru » Ancash » Huaraz » Mount HuarascanWe had extended out time in Lima due to my bout of the flu and though I still wasn’t feeling great we decided it was time to move on. A spur of the moment decision had us booking a day bus for the eight hour trip north to the region of Peru which is home to 22 mountains over 6000 meters making it the highest mountain range in the world outside of the Himalayas. The region is known as the Cordilleras and includes Mt Huascaran at 6768 meters which is Peru’s highest point. It was a very scenic trip - first it followed the coastal highway - not particularly scenic as it was a sand desert, but interesting all the same. We passed many sad villages - hundreds of tiny shacks, without running water or electricity, ... read more
Back in the mountains
Published: January 23rd 2008South America » Peru » Ancash » Huaraz » Mount HuarascanHi Folks, Up v early (6am) this morning for a flight on a very small plane - Vicki - it was the wee tiney LC Busre plane. We were headed back up into the mountains again to visit another SU Girasoles sight called Kusi near the village of Huaraz in the Ancash area. The Ancash area is close to the area called the Cordillera Blanca in Peru - the only area in the Andes where you will find snow on the mountains. It comprises a range of mountains all in excess of 20,000 feet. Needless to say, that during the time I was there, I never saw the mountain from the land as it was constantly shrouded in cloud. The only time I got to see it was on the flight back out when we saw ... read more

Huaraz Improvisation and the Escape Tactics of a Depressed Climber
Published: August 4th 2005South America » Peru » Ancash » Huaraz » Mount HuarascanWell, it is the final hours of a 14 day stay in and out and around the city of Huaraz and I must say that I’m glad to be moving on. My experiences here have been somewhat bittersweet and the expectations of adventure and accomplishment have fallen short. I also can’t say that I like Huaraz all that much either. Here’s the breakdown: The morning after (there’s got to be…name that movie theme song!) arriving in Cusco, I took a taxi to the airport almost 3 hours before I needed to get there because of the impending taxi strike at 6 am. Almost everyone flying that day, at whatever time, was already there too. Luckily, LAN Peru is a very organized airline and had employees trolling the check-in line for passengers of the early flights and ... read more
Accent of Huascaran
Published: June 13th 2005South America » Peru » Ancash » Huaraz » Mount HuarascanThe Cordillera Blanca.. I figured i´d go big and then go to the Beach!! I attempted Mt. Huascaran (6655m), the highest point in Peru is the South summit (6700m) but it is impassable this year, so we attempted the north summit. Didn´t make it, but had a beautiful 5 days on the mountain..and cold, and hard to breath. Spent 2 nights camped on the ice at 5400m. Hard to sleep up there!! ... read more
