Distance driven today: 194 miles / 312 km Cumulative distance driven: 9,842 miles / 15,839 km Today’s trip: Riobamba to Machala, Ecuador We started riding around 9:30 in the morning and immediately we felt that it was cold enough that we needed to dress much warmer. On top of that, it had started raining as we were leaving the city of Riobamba. We stopped and put on our full rain gear, warm long sleeves shirts, and had to dig out the winter riding gloves from the bottom of our duffel bags. I hadn’t used my winter gloves since riding through Montana back in early June and for a moment it felt weird having them on. The road heading westbound towards the Pacific coast took us initially over a pass over the Andes at almost 4.000m / ... read more

Usually around a holiday in the States we co-ordinate a pot luck with everyone from our church and other friends. This one was the Resurrection Day Potluck. Brenda graciously opened her new home to everyone. It is the most convenient since it is just across the street from the church.... read more

Most of the basic and intermediate schools here are a great source for street art. It may not be as nice as most, but it still tells a story. The walls are first painted white then each class gets a section of the wall to paint with whatever they want. These pictures are only one side of the property.... read more

Today was an awesome day. First of all was a teaching from Pastor Fredy on Acts 8:26-40, when Phillip meets the enuch who is reading the book of Isaiah, even though he does not understand it. In verse 36 it says "Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” After the Spanish service a group of us drove to Gualaceo to where the Paute River is lower and slower and had a Baptism Service with the help of the pastor and members of Calvary Chapel Gualaceo. There were eight members of our church, all Ecuadorian, that professed a desire to be Baptised. What a tremendous opportunity for us Gringos to join them in their profession of faith. The ... read more

Today we went to Ingapirca to see the ruins. Braulio invited us to go with him, Chanel and Mandy to celebrate his birthday. Ingapirca is a town in Cañar Province, Ecuador which is named after an Inca archeological site just outside the town. These are the largest known Inca ruins in Ecuador. The most significant building is the Temple of the Sun, an elliptically shaped building constructed around a large rock. The building is constructed in the Inca way without mortar in most of the complex. The stones were carefully chiseled and fashioned to fit together perfectly. The Temple of the Sun was positioned so that on the solstices, at exactly the right time of day, sunlight would fall through the center of the doorway of the small chamber at the top of the temple. Most ... read more

At Calvary Chapel Cuenca, the Ecuadorians serve almuerzo (lunch) between the English and Ecuadorian Services on Sunday. The almuerzo usually consists of rice, pollo (chicken) or carne (beef), fried plantain, and a drink (juice or yogurt with fruit). About five months ago, we asked the pastor if the Gringos (which is not a derogatory words down here, it just describes someone who is not Ecuadorian) could serve our Ecuadorian brothers and sister in Christ a traditional American meal. He agreed so in November we served meatloaf, mashed potatoes with gravy and a green salad. The Ecuadorians had no idea what meatloaf was, but they loved it. They usually serve about 100 almuerzos on Sunday, but we were blessed and served 166 meals. It was awesome, but I was busy serving and didn’t have a chance to ... read more

Almost every November in the States, since we gave our lives to Christ, we prepared shoe boxes filled with various items for children in third world countries that were collected by our church and then sent to Samaritan’s Purse. Samaritan's Purse is an evangelical Christian humanitarian organization that provides aid to people in physical need as a key part of Christian missionary work. The organization’s president is Franklin Graham, son of Christian evangelist Billy Graham. The name of the organization is based on the New Testament Parable of the Good Samaritan, in which Jesus uses a parable to teach people one form of the Golden Rule; "love your neighbor as yourself". The day was led by a young couple, who are both clinical psychologists, with a heart for children. They are the clown and the girl ... read more

Well, it has been a while since I posted anything. I am sure glad that we are not working down here, because we are too busy to do that. I have dedicated today to catching up on the blog, so you will see three entries today. First of all is our Cruise to the Bahamas: In January we took a trip to the States. We flew from Cuenca to Quito, had about a 6 hour layover there, and then we flew to Miami. The Quito airport is brand new, less than a year old. But as you can see by the pictures it has hardly any traffic compared to US airports. Most of the restaurants were American – Outback Steakhouse, Johnny Rockets, etc. We spent a few days in Miami “trying” to do some shopping. But ... read more
