"The times we had, Oh when the wind would blow with rain and snow Were not all bad, We put our feet just where they had to go." 'Postcards from Italy', Beirut (Gulag Orkestar, 2006) South America, late August 2011 and Ben and I are hopping in to a cab to the airport in Medellin, Colombia in order to grab a plane to Quito, Ecuador: my final country. The journey was a touch harrowing. We were pulled aside in Medellin Airport and body scanned because it was thought we were drug mules. They laughed at strange X ray images of us, presumably at the family jewels. Then we had our bags searched A LOT. They all jeered like leering hyenas. It should be noted that we have heard that crossing the boarder on land is either ... read more

Hola. Our final day in Ecuador :-(. We´re flying to Peru tonight. Olie is currently trying to sort out somewhere for us to sleep in Lima (his job last time we wrote the blog!) I was looking forward to a few days relaxing in the sunshine last time we wrote...it didn´t quite work out like that... 28/08/11 Olie decided it would be a great idea to sign up to a 25km mountain bike ride down the side of the highest active volcano in the world. I wasn´t that keen (...can´t we just do 5km?!), but gave in eventually. I wish I hadn´t! We got up at 6am and without any prep for the trip quickly tried to pack a bag. Olie contemplated shorts but I pursuaded him to put jeans on as it was a bit ... read more

Although we have only been here 3 days, we have definitely experienced a few adventures already. Half an hour after our arrival in Quito, we managed to lose each other while taking the metro bus to the centre. Luckily we both managed to find our way to the hostel about an hour later, but the first lesson was learnt. The first two days were spent wandering around Quito and especially the old colonial town. The houses are really beautiful and the visit of the monastery of san francisco was really interesting. Lots of churches were of course visited and we also managed to meander around the new town. The hostel we stayed at in Quito was really nice and friendly. We had an amazing view from the top bar onto the old town and met a ... read more

Hola! I´ve finally dragged Olie out of a random school uniform shop in search of his beloved football shirts, so we can update you on our first week in Ecuador. It´s been fantastic and flown by, despite enduring a 17 hr bus journey, with 5 hrs at complete standstill due to a landslide (hideous!)... 19/08/11 - So...last time we wrote we were due to fly to Quito; the 2nd highest city in the world and the 2nd largest city in Ecuador. Despite our hostal owner failing to show and pick us up, everything ran pretty smoothly. We caught a taxi to the hostal in the Historic Centre (another UNESCO World Heritage site - awarded for having the best preserved centre in Latin America) and soon realised we´d arrived on ´crazy street´. A tramp stood in front ... read more

Once I'd collected my bags at the airport, only slightly worried that history would repeat itself and I'd be left without my bags, I made my way to the taxi rank. I had told Michelle that I would make my own way to their place, and I was expecting to be ripped off by the taxi drivers, as had happened the last time. But no, the first taxi offered to take me at the "proper" price and off I went. He had the radio tuned to a local sports station and he filled me in on what I had missed during my flight. When I took off Uruguay were winning 1-0 and ended up winning 3-0. Once back at Michelle's I settled back in, and over an early dinner we planned the rest of my stay. ... read more

After spending a few days in Mancora i got the bus straight to Quito in Ecuador. The journey involved a bus change at the border where the bus driver refused to put my bike in the hold first and ended up leaving no space for it. The end result was it being put upright in the toilet of the bus, meaning no one could use it for the 12 hour journey to Quito. Needless to say i wasn't the most popular person on the bus that day! I arrived in Quito early the next morning and met up with some friends i'd made in Cusco, Abbie and Jemma. We decided to travel together for the rest of the trip as we had the same plans and flew out of Bogota at around the same time. On ... read more

...a trip to the centre of the earth... Due to Argentina being in the southern hemisphere, July is the middle of winter. Whilst my Facebook feeds are full of people talking about their summer holidays, here in Buenos Aires it's freezing. To rectify this matter, I decided to use my two week long winter holiday to head further north in search of the sun. I had decided to visit Michelle, who I had last seen in 2008, when I spent July 4th with her family at their cabin on Lake Michigan. () When I moved to Argentina in July 2008, Michelle moved to Ecuador a couple of months later. Fast forward 3 years she is now married to José and they're processing his paperwork to get him his green card into the States. This meant that ... read more

Woke up to a considerably foggier day in Ibarra, and had Fernanda and Celeste take me for a walk around the plazas. The blooming trees and ancient-looking buildings give Ibarra a certain charm that is hard to describe. Although it is interesting to note that the whole family mentioned the influence of Columbians there (seeing as the border is not that far away). Unfortunately, they have always been a problem in the city and are the reason for a lot of the crime there. After our walk, I boarded the next bus to Quito and got the great privilege of sitting next to Daniel, a thirteen-year-old boy, who is one of the nicest kids I have ever met. His grandmother and aunt were overjoyed when they found that of all the five people on the bus, ... read more

My second Sunday at the Carolinas Park. Unfortunately, we got to the aerobics dance class about 15 minutes late, which is enough time to miss to make what could be a successfull workout into just a sad fail. It didn't make too much of a difference in the end because soon after we arrived, it started to rain. Everyone scrambled for safety and once the whole group had cleared, the rain clouds conveniently disappeared never to return again. But we made the best of the afternoon by walking through the entire park, which was so much more enormous than I had originally thought. We walked passed a children’s horse riding area, botanical garden, paddleboats, and antique car house, and even a small farris wheel. A few days earlier, Julia, Paige, and I took some random buses ... read more

If I have one tip when gong to Ecuador, it would be to basically bring ALL your cash in $1 bills. I had spent all my 1’s, 5’s, and 20’s, and what can only be a tourist's greatest fear, was left with only a $100 bill. So much, yet so worthless in that form! After unsuccessfully getting change at a bank, and with no coins, I was unable to get myself to work, so I drove around with Nancy to two other banks who also rejected her asking to split a hundred. After Nancy kindly allowed me to exchange the bill after she got the same amount out of the ATM, we drove around Quito for a while. Though the day was pretty gray and cold, Paige and I decided to visit some unseen sights of ... read more
