Finally heading into the amazon rainforest!! been wanting to come here all my life! and it was an amazing trip! It started with an 8hr overnight bus ride from Quito to Lago Agrio, a small town deep in the jungle, (right near the Colombian border infact so a bit of a dangerous town) the bus ride was long and uncompforatable but i managed to sleep enough so it was ok. Arrived in the morning and met up with the rest of my group, some swiss germans and 2 norwegians. Saw a woman trying to sell this little monkey for $25! Met our guide then had a 3hr minibus ride further into the jungle, then a 3hr motorised canoe to our huts etc, the Cuyabeno reserve we stayed in and is it ever deep into the amazon!! ... read more

So we’ve only been in South America for 3 days when we come across Charlie…an English backpacker who is part of our Jungle Trek Group. The other lucky participants of our gruelling 17hour journey to the Cuyabeno reserve in the Amazon jungle were Marc, a French Canadian student, and Sandra, Pablo and Natalie, three native Ecuadorians. The Journey It started bad, got worse, torturous even but it only took 30minutes in the jungle to make it all worthwhile. We met at the travel agency in torrential rain that would have disabled the UK transport system for weeks. We were given a lift across town to the mad, bad and chaotic bus depot. Fortunately our native Ecuadorians helped us negotiate the bedlam to get on the correct coach. Now the road out of Quito to the ... read more

South America » Ecuador » East » Misahualli April 9th 2007

Hi all One of the reasons for us visiting ecuador was to visit the Amazon. After trying unsuccesfully to book a tour we headed to a small town called Misahualli in the hope of finally getting a tour. The small town of Misahualli is also famous for a group of monkeys that live in the town square. Many people have told us that the monkeys are crazy and real trouble makers however we had to see for ourselves. When we got to the town it was really hot and on sitting down to have lunch we were joined by 2 monkeys who lay out on the tile floor of resturant to cool down while the owner finally got one out the other would run in and lie down cooling itself. This provided much amusement for ... read more

hi friends. Please forgive me for this Mega-Post…but it is trying to capture 4 rad days of jungle. My journey has carved deeper into the heart of Ecuador. It has been exciting, awe-inspiring and heart breaking. After a few more bumpy bus rides we arrive in the jungle town of Tena. This is where many of the Amazon families and tours stock up on supplies. Our guide suggested we buy some food and gifts here to give to the families and schools as a token of our appreciation. My gift idea was a ball for the school children. Yeah for games! We also bought rice and beans and of course....lots of chocolate. After shopping, we met with the family we will be staying with. They are Quechan Indians that have lived in the jungle for their ... read more

Well, we made it back from our Jungle Tech Trip. WOW!!! The jungle was everything I though it would be and more. We left last Thursday from Cayambe and drove to a town east of Quito called Baeza. Baeza is in the cloud forest (not jungle) and was home to the 2005 world rafting championships. There was not much to the town, however, the visit to the organic farm and agroforestry project developed by the municipal government was awesome. We learned how to make a fertilizer stew using goat shit, molases, a plant called ahi (like hot peppers - it is a natural insect repellant), alfalfa, goat milk, yeast, and water. It was definitely an interesting brew. After doing that, we learned more about developing worm beds to create fertilizer for crops, then we had a ... read more

Dear friends, Shiripuno Amazon Lodge and Shiripuno Research Center, whose mission in the Huaorani Reserve is to promote ecotourism and tropical ecological studies, invite you to the very first bird survey of the Shiripuno area. . May 7-13, 2007 (Monday to Sunday) From Coca, the Shiripuno Amazon Lodge is seven hours from Coca (three hours by car and four hours by motorized canoe) The Shiripuno River is located about 75 km southeast of Coca and just outside the Yasuni National Park boundaries, has a wide variety of habitats, such as terra firme, old vàrzea, riparian forest, small oxbow lakes, clay licks, moriche swamps, and small streams. A check of the “Birds of Ecuador” by Robert S.Ridgely and Paul J. Greenfield reveals that the avifauna of this area is little studied and poorly known. Our Goal: ... read more
