My journey into the Amazon rainforest only got better. After the piranha fishing (very unsuccessfully I might add, tricky little buggers can nibble around the hook), we went on another short hike through the forest. To our delight, just near the lodge, we saw some small black monkeys called Black-Mantle Tamarin. They had been hanging out in the area for a couple of days. Then a short while later we came across the Pygmy Marmoset Monkey, apparently the smallest monkey in the world. Not long after that we saw some Squirrel monkeys, and later we saw more Squirrel Monkeys who had joined up with a troop of Capuchin monkeys. As we getting in our canoe and heading up the canal towards the lake that leads back to the Lodge we had to stop and make way ... read more

I arrived in Quito on Sunday afternoon, checked into my gorgeous little hotel, La Rabida and decided to go for a short walk. I asked the friendly guy at reception where to wander and he gave me a little map and pointed me in the right direction. Then I asked if it was safe - I had heard that Quito was in parts quite dangerous. He responded that it was perfectly safe, but as an afterthought added that I shouldn't take my camera or more money than I think I would need. So not really then! Anyhow Sunday afternoons in most Latin American countries from what I can tell is completely dead, however I wandered around the neighbourhood in the area that I am staying, Mariscal. It was only on my return that found a guidebook ... read more

Welcome to the Jungle So, we left Quito at around 6am to begin our journey towards Tena and then on to the Amazon Jungle. We stayed one night with a small indigenous community who prepared us fresh food and we spent the night watching (and participating!) in local dances and rituals. We travelled by small pick up trucks in order to get there along the bumpy roads, and me and Jo were more than happy to ride on the open back with one of the locals carrying the food. It was a real eye opener. The community consisted of a total of 48 people. We all trudged up a slippery mud hill in our wellies to get to our wooden lodges with their straw roofs, slipping all over the place and laughing loudly which made the ... read more

Had it not been for a few kayaking buddies from way back when, I dont think I ever would have left the Zona Cafetera. I certainly wouldnt be sitting here in Tena, Ecuador, whitewater kayaking the headwaters of the Amazon River. As the date of our upcoming rendezvous in Quito rapidly approached, I hopped an 8-hour bus ride from Salento to Popayán, breaking up the 24 hour trip from Zona Cafetera to Quito into 3 tolerable days. Popayán is known as ´The White City´for its whitewashed city walls. The entire city plaza is stunningly absent of color, especially last week; Popayán is most famous for its Semana Santa, or Holy Week, processions. Last week the streets were rumbling under high scaffoldings as painters chipped, spackled, smattered, and refinished every wall in the city center in a ... read more

We are fine. We are currently in a little town called Tena on the edge of the Amazon jungle. It feels like we're IN the jungle. It's hot and humid, and rains most days. Lots of neat insects and incredible plants. Rivers everywhere, waterfalls, orchids and birds of all colors. Here's a bit about our life this week Lisa and I went out after our own volunteer work to see Dave and Steven at the animal reserve. It was great to see Steven in his element. He's giving tours to groups that come through - in Spanish! He knows how to feed all the animals, and is right at home there. The only animal he truly fears now are the lions and the crocodile. They exhibit enough aggresive behaviour to make it plain that they would ... read more

This week we went to the river to swim with a local family. The river was high due to the rains, but we had a nice swim. The teenagers, Ecuadorian and Canadian all had a great time playing in the water, and then the thunder, lightening and rain hit. Hard. We evacuated to a small hut next to the tiny soccer field in Serena, but the teens decided we were so wet they might as well play soccer- barefoot in the mud.. check out the photos. We are also getting to know the kids at the center quite well, and finding the sweet spots in town, like the best icecream, and street vendors. Planning to spend April in Banos. Total immersion is certainly a great way to learn a language, and to get a headache too! ... read more

We've explored Tena pretty thoroughly and feel very comfortable. Have found a lovely pool, and we had a terrific day river rafting. The guide was very professional and safe, but added lots of fun to it as well. We screamed some, paddled lots, surfed behind some huge rocks, landed high and dry on some rocks, pulled the nose of the boat straight up to the sky for awhile, and more! The guys have gone off for their week of volunteering at the animal center. It's only 20 minutes away but they start at 6:30 Am and since there's housing and meals available, they stay out Sun-Friday. Steven certainly was thrilled at the idea of feeding the crocodiles, boa constrictors and lions! (African lions, kept as pets till they're too big) Sounds like they've got hard work ... read more

We have had a wonderful time in Ecuador thus far. Getting used to the altitude wasn't too bad at all. Getting our 6 month visa was a bigger deal, but that's done too. We have managed quite a few high-adventure type activities, mostly in Mindo. We went zip-lining, which lived up to the all the great things we'd heard about it. Flying along on a cable hundreds of feet above the ground is pretty exiting, doing it 12 times is pretty impressive. Dave, Steven and Katrina did a rappel called canyoning down a 40 meter waterfall, and we all went on a tubing trip down a very raging river, and were completely blown away by the acrobatics of the guides who throw themselves between the tubes and the rocks repeatedly redirecting the 7 tubes tied together. ... read more
