Last weekend we went to Barranquilla to bid farewell to the saintly Chris Davies. He will be missed, and not just by the under aged underprivileged youth of the BQ. Saturday I went to pick up the esteemed Timothy Healy from the airport, I was of course late (transportation strike or something) and had failed to give Tim any information such as local address, phone number, etc. This gave him ample time to stew over the possibility that he had flown into the wrong airport. I left my cell phone on the bus, making it like #8 I’ve lost in my time here or something equally ridiculous. Sunday we got up early and went fishing on the boat of one of the families from the school. Something went terribly awesomely wrong and we ended up on ... read more

Warning: This blog is about me doing nothing for a couple of days on the Colombian Carribean. After a pretty tiring 18 hour drive from Bogota, we arrived in Santa Marta to be greeted by heat and humidity. With the temperature in the mid 30s, and humidity pretty high, the dusty city of Santa Marta was a bit of a shock after coming from Bogota, in the mountains, and off the air conditioned bus. At least it wasn´t as bad as a story I heard from a man who had been to Venezuela, who said that he had woken up one morning on the bus to find ice on his glasses - I suppose wasting fuel to cool the bus down when petrol is almost free is no biggy. I had caught the bus with Karina ... read more

Almost all of the cell phones here, including my own, are prepay. Meaning that when your money runs out, and it does frequently, you hang up on who you are talking to. It makes for a quick easy exit from a conversation. Plus hanging up and claiming you ran out of money is oh so believable. The best is when you know they don’t have money to call you back. Great. Time and time again my tendency to not answer the phone is reinforced. I get punished for almost every pick up. I understand now why the elderly play at not being able to figure out a cellphone, they just don’t want to talk to anyone anymore. I’m totally onboard. Memory sticks are like dirty penises to me. You aren’t sticking that disgusting thing in my ... read more

Our final 2 weeks in Colombia sees us heading 5 hours further along the Caribbean coast to Santa Marta. At least it was meant to be 5 hours, as is the way with Colombia we were sat in a jam for two hours waiting for an accident to clear. This meant we arrived about 12.30 at night, with no idea of where to stay, brilliant. Fortunately we got chatting to an English guy on the coach who just happened to be travelling with a Colombian girl, so we headed to the same hostel as them and low and behold we ended up lucking out and getting a 4 bedroom room with them, sweet...or at least it would have been if it wasn´t for the fact that the room was about 40 degrees, with only two small ... read more

I´m not quite sure how it happened, but one minute we were out on the town, drinking cheap cocktails and eating shit food with the Hendry Joneses, then the next minute we wake up in Colombia with but a few fleeting mint flavoured memories of our time with Chris and Caz, and an empty bank account. With our brains in no fit state to endure any more Spanish lessons, we decided to head back to the fishing village of Taganga before seeing some more of Colombia. The bus trip to Taganga was for once characterised not by death defying driving, but by vicious throbbing hangovers, and by a Caribbean rainstorm that turned the streets into grade IV rapids within about 3 minutes. It was quite incredible to view! Taganga has perhaps the highest Backpacker per Capita ... read more

The guy who does Jean Luc’s spanish voice dub is a poor replacement for the sonorous manliness of Patrick Stewart. I think facebook status updates are not the most appropriate place to express personal anguish over someone dying. Maybe I’m just old and out of touch. One thing I love about Spanish is than instead of paying attention you lend (prestar) your attention to someone. I don’t tend to lend mine too often or for too long. Like that stingy ass kid Neil with all the awesome toys from Loma Vista. Oh, Neil already has a friend over and I can’t come in? I didn’t want to play with your fag Castle Greyskull anyways you toy hoarding son of a bitch. How Al and I stayed friends while fighting over Neil’s affections I’ll never know. I ... read more

Adam and I bought a couch because, to be perfectly honest, we needed someplace to sit. I’m pretty sure the slipping pass to Chalmers for the game tying three only happened because Jors Adam and I were flapping our arms like Angels in the Outfield. Jerry, THE HEAT. It has arrived, in full force. To escape it we went to San Lorenzo this weekend, a nearby mountain town that I visited once a few years ago. Last time our accommodations were pretty sketchy, this time they were amazing. It was like a ski trip, freezing cold outside, at 2200 meters (about a mile and a half), communal eating, sitting around a fireplace to keep warm and bunkbed-filled rooms. Josh, Adam and I went with Ed, his lady Kirsi, their son Leo-Hey! her cousin and his wife ... read more

I went skinny dipping in the ocean recently and saw my junk surrounded by phosphorescent algae. It was the most beautiful thing ever. If you aren’t part of my family take a second and picture it. I watched my first KU game in English in three years and it was the best game ever. I’m pretty sure we are going to be national champions. As are the Royals. I climbed to a pre-Colombian indigenous city and while the hike up about made my heart explode it was a day well spent. We finally have a principal at school which is nice. He’s British so he speaks Cockney instead of American but it’s closer than many of the students can muster. I had a student tell me I’m a better teacher when I’m single because I’m not ... read more

Although I think it's fairly empty saber rattling from a head of state with some real domestic problems on his hands hoping to distract his masses I won't let it stop me from personally declaring war on both Venezuela and Ecuador. If you've ever played Risk with me you know that's something to be slightly inconvenienced by. You know how awesome snow days are? What's even better is a Violent Transportation Strike Day. When the snows roll in you hope, but I had no hope of a free day until at like 8 at night I got a phone call telling me I didn't have to work. It was the best thing ever. Oh and the bus drivers are angry about something, who knows. I spent the day getting a massage. I hate it when people ... read more
