We left Salento in the middle of the afternoon and took a bus to Pereira at 2:50pm. There wasn't anything particular that we had planned, but we were making our way to Guatape, and had stayed in Salento a little longer in order to squeeze in the plantation tour. Getting to Guatape was going to take about 4-6 hours from Pereira to Medellin, and then another 2 to Guatape. So it was just as well that we were breaking up the journey by stopping in Pereira, since the bus from Salento was going to take over an hour just on it's own. Pereira is a fairly large city. It's clean and efficient looking. We once again took a taxi to the hostel, which was on the outskirts. Felipe was working the desk and checked us in. ... read more

Two weeks ago I would have never guessed Colombian would of changed my life for the better. My father informed me he was getting married to his Colombian girlfriend, as most fathers would he invited me to the wedding. I started my journey from Louisville, Ky. I had to take 3 flights to arrive at my destination in Pereira Colombia. When the plane arrived in Bogota, Colombia's capital city, my jaw dropped. The luscious green mountains were unbelievable. I spent the next few hours drinking coffee and taking in the view from the airport. My flight eventually took off across the Andes mountains on route to Pereira. My jaw decided to drop even more, considering I had a window seat on the plane. The terrain from above looking down is more beautiful than words could express. ... read more

In places there was only the road, a few houses, and then sheer drops of many hundreds of metres on either side. We had opted for the front two seats, which made for some interesting viewing, not only of the vistas, but also of the overtaking manoeuvres employed by our driver. As the majority of the road was single lane, the bus driver had to overtake numerous slow trucks, many times on blind corners as there was not a straight stretch of road for more ... read more

We flew back from the Galapagos Islands to Quito, Ecuador because it was closer to the next country that we were visiting – Colombia. Our destination was Pereira; a city in the west of Colombia tucked in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in a coffee producing area or ‘La Zona Cafetera’. I couldn’t believe my luck when I found out that we would be in Colombia for the World Cup. It was the under-20 Football / Soccer World Cup. This was going to be epic! Getting into Colombia from Ecuador was a bit of a process. Our flight from the Galapagos brought us to Quito where we got a bus to the Colombian border. The route had a few reported robbery incidents in the past but we’d travelled on similar routes and were not too ... read more
