Mate on the Mountain
Published: December 12th 2009South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Valle NevadoI totally stole the title and most of the pictures from my friend Ben. All credit is due to him. I am pretty sure my exceedingly dull descriptions of mountains and my effort to get up them will not be missed. Instead, here are some pictures of a Sunday day hike in November to the summit of Pintor (4180m). ... read more

Skiing in the Andes.... a dream realised!
Published: August 30th 2008South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Valle NevadoGot picked up early this morning in a people mover, after not getting our wake up call from reception... lucky for us, leigh had set the alarm. Also lucky for us that we had both been wide awake since 2 am with our jetlag. Plus, we had two separate occasions of people bounding into our room. Some geek came in about 4 am calling out "Phoebe? PHOEBE?!".. WRONG ROOM!!!! The joys of staying in a hostel. So, we stopped along the way to rent our ski gear, including pantalons (hehe), gloves, skis, boots, etc. and headed up to Valle Nevado, about a 40 min drive from Santiago. Another horrendous driver, much worse than the last. Now it´s been a few years since i skied but a few minutes into it i had my form back and ... read more
Farellones Ski Hostel
Published: August 4th 2008South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Valle NevadoFarellones Again... So we had to come back up to the ski resort to collect our boards and snow gear. Turns out we timed it perfectly; arriving the day that a big snow storm came and riding in perfect sunny fresh powder conditions the next day. The best riding day of the season, couldn’t have got much better than that. Though luck from me ran out quickly when we were riding home our usual slope, Andrea and I met a dog on the slopes. We were taking photos of him as he sat down next to us all friendly. We continued to ride on and then we went into some fresh powder. I got stuck up to my knees in the powder and as I was trying to get out the same dog was coming towards ... read more
Whoosh, whoosh! Skiing in las Tres Valles
Published: August 2nd 2008South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Valle Nevado(The location is not actually quite right but not all places are listed - we actually stayed in Farellones but we did ski in Valle Nevado a couple of days...) So, it was pretty cold the morning we arrived at the ski shop around 7.15am to catch a minibus up into the mountains. While waiting for them to start selling tickets the shop next door caught Hugh´s eye and he discovered that their transfers were 2/3 the price and the bus was just leaving so off we went. Despite the fact that I was already wearing much of my ski gear, the driver kept the windows open all the way and it was absolutely freezing. We knew it had rained in the night in Santiago and it was not long before we spotted snow on the ... read more
After 3 weeks of solid riding, finding jobs....(deciding not to take the jobs in the snow park!) our adventures in the mountains are coming to an end tomorrow. As we say goodbye to our good friends Jeremiah and Andrea we are sad but excited for our adventures ahead. This week we are heading to the southern parts of Chile (but we are not going to give it all away just yet) and to be honest we are not too sure of where exactly our adventures will take us next. Yesterday was defiantly the highlight of our riding days. We got to ride off piste on the part of the mountain where pro’s and their bros go to ride.... Santa Theresa! It was here Jana’s riding progressed to rock jumping and Drew progressed to taking a huge ... read more
Hola! Here are some photos for everyone to see...... So today it is puking with snow and it's so amazing to look outside and see the snow cover everything again. We are looking forward to shredding some fresh powder real soon. Kow-A-Bunga! Nothing much to add yet, no jobs as of yet so looks like our trip may be a little shorter on the slopes, but we have so much to look forward to around south America. Love to you all Jana ad Andrew xoxoxo... read more
Hola! So here we are in the mountains looking at the beautiful mountains covered in snow every day. Learning Spanish and snowboarding; we have to say life is great right. All our long hours of work have finally paid off. So where to begin? We arrived in Santiago on Friday and found a back-packers in Plaza-De-Armas. It’s just like another city really, except for the shoe-shiners here and there. We stayed here for 2 nights before travelling up to the mountains. The snow has fallen early so the season has started in most resorts up here which has made it difficult to find work and for the fact that we speak poco espanol (little Spanish!) However we have convinced some people to maybe give us jobs in exchange for accommodation and a lift pass! So we ... read more
La ... read more
Skiing in Valle Nevado
Published: February 16th 2007South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Valle NevadoOur first South American skiing in Valle Nevado. After a few days in Santiago, we headed out for Valle Nevado in Los Andes. It's only about 1 1/2 hour drive from Santiago, but it's one scary drive. There are 35+ switchbacks and another 30-something hairpin turns, meaning that from Santiago you basically go straight up!! We shared the ride with a Brasilian couple, one of which had been practicing his english. As I was getting very carsick, I had to do something about it pretty quick, or we were going to have "a situation". (Never thought to take any tablets before the drive as I didn't know how stomach turning it was!) In his wisdom, he spoke to the driver (who just ha... read more
