Well hello hello hello. Long time no speak with an awful lot of you and for that i apologise, although it works both ways you know!! Anyway, for those of you who dont know, i am currently on my way back down to the most southerly part of the world, working with BAS (British Antarctic Survey), heading towards the Antarctic Peninsular and my home for the next 4/5 months. I am heading for a different base this year with the task of building a whole new amenities centre for all the scientists and crew who live and work there all year round. The base is called Rothera Research Station and can be found on Adelaide island about half way down the west coast of the peninsular. We couldn't travel all this way without visiting some penguins, so that was what we did this morning. We travelled in a Zodiac boat to Isla Magdalena which is in the Magellan Strait. It took about an hour to get there and is not a fun trip for anyone who suffers seasickness. The island itself is a national park, with a path from the jetty up to the lighthouse. And along the way you can marvel at the thousands of waddling little penguins and wonder why they were put on this earth (tourism?). Some of them let you get quite close and one even attacked our camera in a similar fashion adopted by Russell Crowe. They were an impressive sight, if a bit smelly. Pierre-Yvon, pour t;expliquer ca je devrais commencer par Check ben ca... hehehe check moi ben ... c;est ca. C;Est un groupe de musique que Merlin ecoute beaucoup... Voir meme tout le temps. Les musiques ont environ 8-10 min, la plus longue 42min.... C;Est tres progressif, il en ecoute le matin en se levant le soir avant de s;endormir, dans les bus, devant un paisage.... C'est fou comme il a differente sorte d'herbergement, si on prend seulement au Chilie... On a commencer dans un hotel ou on rentre et ça pue, on dort dans un dortoire a 6 lits (3 superposes) et ça pue encore plus, les salles de bains sont communes. Ensuite, Santiago, on est dans une chambre d'hotel sur 2 etages et on une chauffrette :) (salle de bain prive), en plus le dejeuner est compris (c'est se qui nous a fait choisir cette hotel). Cependant, le dejeuner, c'est 2 mini pains, 2 "copes" de confitures et 1 de buerre avec 1 cafe ou the noir. Jean-Pierre avait demande un peu de lait pour son cafe et ça lui a couter un extra de 400 pesos (environ 1 $). Bref, pas un gros dej. Ensuite, a Puerto Montt, on ... read more

Aika kuluu vaikkei sita uskonut kuluttavansakaan ja kaikki hyva(kin) loppuu aikanaan. On meidan viimeisen pysakkimme aika etela-Amerikassa ja saavuimme Punta Arenakseen Chilessa jo maanantaina ja nyt odottelemme lentoamme 31.8. kohti Aucklandia Uudessa Seelannissa. Uudet seikkailut siis odottavat, mutta sita ennen voi viela nauttia taman pienehkon kaupungin antimista ja antaa viimeisten tunnelmien ja espanjan kielen kuplia sisalla. Punta Arenaksen kaupunki sinansa ei suuria elamyksia tarjoa, mutta olemme loytaneet niita jalleen kerran pienista asioista. Tuo otsikko on ehka niista mielenkiintoisin: eilen hostellimme omistaja toi takapihan pyykkinarulle roikkumaan kaksi erittain epailytavan nakoista elaimen ruhoa. Ensimmainen ajatuksemme oli laskea hanen puudeliensa lukumaara, niin elavasti koiralta toinen lihavarras naytti! Koirat nayttavat edelleen juoksevan ympari taloa, joten olemm... read more
