We set off the following morning really early to try to beat the wind. Unfortunately, the wind was not the only menace on this particular morning. About 10km out of town we were just waking up whilst climbing a big hill when we noticed that the sky had changed colour very quickly and was now very dark, with a thick layer of low black cloud as far as we could see in the direction we were going. We continued riding but soon the rain stuck and we were soaked and very cold. As it looked like the rain was here to stay and there was no shelter for the next 40km or so we stopped and Edouard suggested turning back. Obstinate as I am I wanted to keep going but as I tried to get going ... read more

We proceeded to the Faulklands Islands after a day´s sailing. These islands were well worth visiting, although most unfortunately Anna was still in poor health so I proceeded by tender boat to the island alone. Stanley is a quaint little English style town. Some say there was four seasons in one day when we were there, but I would suggest more like four shades of Winter - sleet, snow, rain and always wind. Around 4c I think. I visited two war memorials, for the Brits-Argentine conflict (1982) and the little known Brits-German conflict of WWI. The Faulklands are a bleak land but have there own beauty. It´s a very isolated life they lead. I also visited the very interesting Brittania House museum and a colony of magellan penguins at nearby Gypsy Cove. Finished the day with ... read more

English summary: After a long busride (5 hours) from calafate to puerto natales we took the connecting bus to Punta Arenas (3 hours) and arrived at 6 pm. We quickly found a hospedaje to spend two nights. We liked the city and the surroundings and spend the day with walking beside the Beagle street and enjoying the sun, salty wind. We went to the museum where we got to know more about the people that lived here at the time it was discovered by the spanish/british/dutch. We also visited the pinguins at Seno Otway. Amazing how these animals (10.000) come back every year at the same spot: breeding in sept/oct, nov/dec baby's are born, jan/feb teaching their baby's to swim, 15 march: leaving. Hi all. Happy Friday or, if you´re reading this another day, Happy whatever day it is. Back when I was planning this trip, a few people expressed an interest in joining me for various parts of the trip. As several of these conversations took place late at night in pubs after adult beverages had been consumed, I disregarded most of them. One or two people, however, have followed up their interest and actually booked a flight to join me on my mad adventure. So it was that I found myself at Santiago airport one Thursday morning waiting for an old work pal, Philip, to join me for a couple of weeks in Chile. I don´t think Philip will mind me saying that he´s had a tough few months recently so he was heading out here for ... read more

After arriving in Chile we took a bus a few hours south to Punta Arenas in hopes of catching a glimpse of the Otway Sound Penguins before they migrated out of the area for the winter. Not much of interest occured during our stay. We came.... we saw... we took penguin photos. Also, at this point in time we have already done another hike (ten days in total). We will be posting information on this most recent trip as soon as we have access to a faster internet connection to download photos (this computer has a download rate of 1 photo every 25 minutes). We hope all is well with everyone. ... read more

So, Paul´s beard is still growing at an alarming rate and we are still continuing our race southwards. We have chilled out for 8 hours at a thermal spa, shared a beach with some sea lions and seals, p-p-p picked up a pengiun at a colony, rented a rib and hung about at a petrol station for 3 hours where Paul took some pictures of some rather large tyres - bet you can´t wait to see the chile ´portfolio´ Highlights include Polly, our pathfinder, which we hired to take around Chiloe - a mysterious island with painted churches and its own gang of mischievious trolls. Didnt see any of them, but did see huge groups of hitch hikers and ended up providing a kind of gringo bus service for them. Due to a mix up with ... read more

Arriving in Punta Arenas after a three hour bus ride from Puerto Natales we collected our bags and walked to our hostel al Fin del Mundo (meaning: At the end of the World). I would recommend this hostel as the people who operate it are very nice. Punta Arenas is a town of good size (110,000) but it looks and feels like a small town. I think this is due to the town being spread out and most buildings are only one or two stories in height. Our hostel was only two blocks from the Plaza de Armes (or called Plaza Munoz Gamero). Our first day consisted of getting tickets for our excursion the next day, eating and wandering aimlessly. I have decided one of my favorite things about meals in Chile and Argentina is that ... read more

We had a spectacular flight over the mountain chains, flying from Santiago, stopping at Puerto Montt and finally arriving at Punta Arenas. We saw amazing snow covered mountains and vulcanos, lakes and fjords. During the landing at Punta Arenas we were welcomed by the famous Patagonian wind. We NEVER experienced a landing like that - the wind was playing with the aircraft and rocking it from side to side. The turn over water made us think for a second that we actually will have a wet landing as the tip of the wing seemed to brush the surface of the lake. We were half expecting the sound of "BEEP BEEP BEEP" from the cockpit and a "BRACE BRACE BRACE" but thankfully it never happened. On the way out of the aircraft we saw that some passengers ... read more

Today was spent entirely on a bright yellow bus from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas, Chile. We are trying to work our way north, and this was the first bus we could get out of Ushuaia. It was about 11 hours...not too bad, not too fun! We left the hostel at 7:30am, and arrived on the outskirts of Punta Arenas about 7 pm. It was a rather dull ride, but we managed to actually see quite a bit of wildlife along the way. Sadly, no photos were taken. But we saw guanacos, foxes, rheas (I think...some gigantic, flightless emu-like bird??), flamingos and one lonely penguin standing at the edge of a land mine area. So, we arrived in Chile and are shocked again at the prices. Arriving later in the evening and tired from the bus, we ... read more

HURRAH!!!!!!!! When all hope seemed lost, we somehow wangled a last minute cancellation on the Navimag for 2 to set sail through the Chilean fjords from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt on the 9th Feb. Can´t tell you how chuffed we are! Watch this space for a future Navimag captain´s log. When we left yas last time we were heading to the little known (and little visited!) Puerto San Julian. After recovering from initial shock at the completely deserted but clearly once very grand ex-wool town we really warmed to the place. Natalie, the local marine biologist, Captain Fernando and Mapu the crazy sea-lovin hound took us on a jaunt around the bay to see (more) penguins, Commerson´s dolphins and lots of sea birds. Hot tips from Natalie included best coffee in town from local petrol ... read more
