An amazing week in San Pedro de Atacama, North of Chile. Hello hello, It's about time for an update, I guess! (Apologies.) 3 weeks ago I had a week off university and I decided to go and spend the week in San Pedro de Atacama, a cute little town in the Atacama desert, North of Chile. After a 24-hour bus ride I found myself a hostel and started to explore the pueblo. First thing I realized was that I should have bought all my food in Santiago instead of buying everything in San Pedro because there I paid about 4 times the price for pretty much everything. Well, next time! I found the cheapest travel agency in San Pedro and booked the four major tours around San Pedro for 45.000. The very same day in the ... read more

Atacama !

Hi it’s Patrick writing just so you know. We’re sorry for blogging in so late . Three days ago we went to the hot springs and that’s what I’m going to talk about . At 10:00 we got in the car to go to the hot springs with our guide Patrizio . When we got there we went straight to the changing room . When I was changed a few minutes after dad, I went to look for him (I forgot to mention to you earlier there are eight springs in the area) and then I saw dad’s bag at one of the springs and I thought he had just gone to the toilet so I went in. Then I went in and then I slipped down the waterfall. A while later dad came back from ... read more

Hi everybody, Emma here. Today was the second day of our stay at the Atacama dessert in Chile. After having the best sleep in a long time we had breakfast and started to get ready for our first horse riding trip in the Atacama dessert! To get ready we had to put on helmets and chaps which are ankle to knee leg protectors. We met our horse riding instructor and he led us to the horses. When we got to the stable we got on our horses mine called Diamond, Alicja´s Lascar after a volcano, Patrick´s Resongon which means impatient and Antonina´s called Guinda which means Cherry. It was Patricks first time horse riding and he fell in love with it at once. We went riding around town and we looked so extraordinary that tourists even ... read more

Our time in the Atacama desert was amazing. We stayed at a beautiful hotel where every day you could choose to do guided excursions in the morning and in the afternoon out into the dessert, to hot springs, to the salt flats, to geysers, to volcanoes and to dozens of other places. On the first day we went horse riding through the oasis and into the dessert and we all liked that so much that we rode horses every day after as well. The mountains, rock formations and sand dunes of the desert were out favorite things, but we also really loved our trip to the salt flats where we saw beautiful pink flamingos bathing in the salt waters.... read more

If you want to see the world's highest geysers at their peak performance time, you have to first wake up at 3am. Dress warm, at least 3-4 layers, it's way below zero up there. Then, stand outside your hotel until the tour bus comes by to pick you up. Bump down the road for a couple of hours, as the bus climbs higher and higher. You will huff and puff more and more, trying to eek out every last gasp of oxygen left in the atmosphere. Your little toesies will be so cold ON the bus, you don't know quite what to expect once getting off the bus. But never fear, once the sun comes up, it's the desert, and you'll be casting off layers of clothes faster than you can say Frosty the Snowman. These ... read more

It's the tired old saying, "When life gives you lemons, make Lemonaide." So cliche, yet so true. If I hadn't been forced to reroute my trip--which at the time before I left was a little worrisome considering the locals were burning down immigration offices--I would never have had the idea to route my way through Chile. What luck! It is another world here. I've seen such works of natural beauty as I never could have before imagined. Places with names like Valley of the Moon. Places where the sky is so incredibly clear, major power players of the world send their best telescopes to view the night skies. (The Atacama Desert is the driest desert on Earth, and has a very high altitude. I guess that combination makes astronomers giddy.) Best yet, I think was meeting ... read more

Again it has been an attack of the lazy bug that has seen so much time pass since our last blog, but don't you worry we finally got some good bug spray and have vanished the lazy bug for good. I will try to keep this blog brief but there has been so much going on that I can't promise anything. First off isn't the easter bunny an amazing bloke/sheila we are thousands of kilometers away from home in the middle of a desert and yet still he/she found us this morning for our little chocolate suprise, good work bugs. More on the desert later. Last blog with left you in great anticipation of a ufo sighting in capella del monte but the only abnormal thing we saw there was in our hostel (the green dome). ... read more

We were accompanied throughout our bus journey north to Salta by the continuous looming presence of the snow capped Andes to our left. Salta was dark and damp when we arrived at dawn the next day. We dropped our gear at our hostel and then wandered about the town for a few hours, visiting a superb market and climbing a hill to the side of the city offering great views over the city. The centre was extraordinarily picturesque, with colonial churches and grand municipal buildings surrounding a central square. We hadn’t expected this from what was only supposed to be a quick stopover. The next day we caught an early morning bus to the Argentina/Chile border and what a spectacular journey it was. The road wound through endless canyons and past rocky plateaus dotted with brightly ... read more
