San Pedro Atacama in the Atacama desert. I visited the valley of death, valley of the moon, and decided to confront my fear of horse riding. There is no better place to do this than the desert with a back drop of volcanoes. There are many active volcanoes in the area. No text needed the photos show the amazing beauty.... read more

Now here comes a moan. Chilean food!! Or rather what is available in the restuarants. I knew it would be difficult for a veggie as it's meat, meat, meat. But didn't expect it to be mainly greasy junk food. At the beginning of this trip I had thought that I may have to switch to a carne diet but seeing the plates on offer was not remotely able to. I had the occassional great meal even one with tofu in Vacuna. But by the time I reach La serena I was very hungry and feeling quite peeved with the situation. SALVATION!! Govindas a Hare Krisha place to eat, two meals later and a very good market (thanks Phil for finding that) I was tickety boo again. Chilean cheese is excellent when bought from a market and the ... read more

Quemadura de sol. Sounds very exotic doesn´t it? What does it mean, you may ask. Sun burn my friends, sun burn. Let me tell you the truly tragic story of my plight at the hands of the sneaky sneaky sun... So my last day in San Pedro was, as I had expected, fairly boring. Luckily there was a girl from Germany at the hostel who was getting the same bus to Copiapo so we spent most of the day lounging around in the hostel. I did go to the market but you will either by pleased or disappointed to hear that I refrained from purchasing any llama-related clothes although I did buy myself a llama keyring and a llama wall decoration which I fully intend to adorn the walls of my house with when I get ... read more

Double and treble assorted 4 -letter words my thingy just dumped 1100 words. Well I'll start again in for a penny in for a pound. Taltal was nice but the weather not so next stop was to be Caldera 300 or km south which is the only way you can go anyway, west is wet and east has no roads. The desert landscape seem to be losing it's enchantment, hills and rock and not a tuft of grass anywhere . VIVA CHILE!!! People out on the national highway picking up garbage, fantastic and good for Chile, cleanliness is next to Godliness. Driving through the desert reminds me of Americas song " Riding through the desert on a horse with no name" endless. Caldera is a bit of a dump nothing really to it, a mining port ... read more

28.11.2011 Antofagasta After dropping Lesley off at the airport, we headed back into town to get our Car papers so we can leave the country. We had to search for a while to find the registrario civil, and when we finallz found it, they told us that we have to wait another 21 days for the papers to be in the system..just another example of how slow and complicated south america is.. well,we decided to sleep on the beach tonight and head to San Pedro de Attacama tomorrow. We went to the cinema later on to whatch the newest Twilight, breaking dawn part 1, Matt fell asleep...lol Then we parked our car up outside a hotel directly on the beach and got ready to go to sleep..when we were all tucked up in bed, we realized ... read more

It is with a heavy heart that I left San Pedro de Atacama. Our time there was shortened by the lack buses headed down south to La Serena, as many were full due to the impending Christmas holidays. For this reason we only had three short days to spend in the dusty desert town. There was some wine drinking in the street and some loud singing and hammock swinging. The highlight of our time in San Pedro would have to be the stargazing tour we went on the first night we got into town. We managed to get onto a tour at midnight and went out to gaze at the desert night sky for 2.5 hours. We learned about Sirius, one of the closest stars, only 8+ light years away, and Betelgeuse, 500+ light years away. We ... read more

Hahahaha get the picture?? Tot snel!... read more

Hey iedereen!! Can't wait!! Het weer is ondertussen al wat aangenamer.. We komen van een koude ... read more

We are currently in the worlds driest desert... any guesses... well done to all the geographers out there who knew that it is the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. We´re about to go sandboarding this afternoon and then see (another) sunset from some sort of salt based lake/cave/mountain. We´ve done all of Bolivia since our last blog on a GAP Adventures tour (I got it for free as a sort of leaving present from STA and snuck Em on with a tidy discount :) ) so quite a lot to tell you about. Bolivia is supposed to be the weirdest country is South America and also the cheapest - which got me excited - and it certainly didnt disappoint on both fronts. We ate a three course lunch for 90p and saw all sorts of weird ... read more
