South America » Chile » Aisén » Coyhaique January 3rd 2012

Hello dear readers, here I am again, struggling to learn how to use the spanish keyboard. Anyway, I made it safely to Coyhaique with about half of the group. We all met in Santiago, as three of them had missed their connections and one was supposed to be on my flight anway. Another joined us at the airport and (happy day) all my luggage came through. Others were not so lucky. Patagonia is breath taking. It is different and familiar and exciting, comforting, dramatic, domestic, and any number of other positive superlatives. I cannot fairly describe what the country side is like here. We drove from a flat plain up through ridges dotted with funny round evergreens that were bent by the wind (sound familiar?) into mountain passes that were stunning, granite walls rising straight up, ... read more

After a long bus ride up to Los Antiguos, Argentina, decided to begin the journey along the Carreterra Austral in Chile with a french couple, Mylan and Jeoff. The adventures began pretty much straight away- Los Antigous is a very pretty village that overlooks Lago Buenos Aires (known as Lago General Carrera in Chile), but it is pretty quiet especially this time of year! We were told that there was a mini-bus-taxi service to the next village, Chile Chico, but after waiting an hour and a half with no sign we decided to walk across the border (a distance of between 3km and 15km depending on who we asked!) In between the two frontiers we tried hitch-hiking; a truck stopped for us and we passed the border sat in the back of a pick-up in true ... read more

After leaving Coyhaique we had 6 days to cover 420km to get to Chaiten so that we could get the ferry on Wednesday evening to Puerto Montt. We left Coyhaique late after cooking a full english breakfast for our swiss companions and getting our bikes back from the shop so only managed 40km the first afternoon. We had two good days next with 100km one day (and found a cafe en route to get a burger) and 80km the other to make it to Puyuhuapi late afternoon on the Sunday. The next 3 days the weather closed in and rained for pretty much the entire time so we were not happy chaps. To make matters worse when we arrived in Chaiten, expecting it to be some sort of haven to dry out and eat nice food, ... read more

The next leg was around 330km from Cochrane to Coyhaique, with the last 100km being paved road. We left Cochrane the day after the Rodeo and made our way up some steep ascents until we reached Lago General Carrera, which is supposed to be one of the biggest bodies of water in South America. Our first view of the lake was awesome as we´d be climbing for a while and saw it as we reached the top - quite a nice reward! We spent a day cycling round the lake and asked a farmer to camp on his land that evening. Luckily Aline is fluent in Spanish so they invited us in for matte and coffee. They also gave us bread and homemade jam which was awsome. We did the same the next night and got ... read more

South America » Chile » Aisén » Carretera Austral March 19th 2011

After getting to the Carretera Austral at Villa O'Higgins we got on the road north towards Cochran which is about 260km away. Route 7 is 90% unpaved, with a stretch of tarmac around Cohaique, so it's quite a bumpy ride. The good thing is that there's so much water around we hardly have to carry any as we can fill up at any time and there's virtually no pollution so no need to filter it. We met a group of scottish cyclists on the way who told us about a town called Tortel. It's about 22km off the main road but they told us it is worth the detour. It's built in the hillside of a bay and all the houses are connected by a series of wooden walkways which wind like a maze over the ... read more

I thought our journey to the Carretera Austral deserved an entry of it's own as it has been pretty epic. The Carretera Austral is the road which winds through southern Chile and is supposed to be one of the most beautiful routes in the world so a lot of cyclists come here to do it. The problem is that it starts on the border of Chile and Argentina so is difficult to get to and involves a 35km unpaved cycle, a ferry, a 6km trek through footpaths not designed for bikes, a 16km unpaved cycle and then another ferry. The second ferry only leaves once a week so timing is pretty important if you don't want to wait a while! The first 35km from El Chalten to the ferry were really cool as we went past ... read more

Tahac nas v tom nenechal, este zavolali dalsi a spolocne sa im ... read more

Nakoniec sme cakali len nieco vyse hodiny. Po case skoncil asfalt a nastalo hrkotanie a kopa prachu. V La Junte nebolo nic zaujimave. There was just one bus from Chaiten heading south and it was to La Junta, so we didnt have too many ... read more

South America » Chile » Aisén » Puerto Aysen February 12th 2011

Just heard there was an earthquake in central Chile yesterday. We are still hundreds of miles to the south, so knew nothing about it. In other words, we are fine. We called at a tiny port called Puerto Chacabuco which is about 8 miles from the larger town of Puerto Aysen. The river that flows between the two used to be navigable, but a recent volcanic eruption made it too shallow. So now all shipping -- including us -- must go to the tiny port. We took the local bus to Aysen (about $1), standing all the way even though a sign clearly indicated no standing was allowed. Also liked the sign that I interpreted as "Bothering the driver can be fatal." It was not a scary ride because we just followed the riverbed, but interesting ... read more

Last weekend in Patagonia I will never forget. Everyone wanted to spend time with us and say thanks for our time spent here. My school prepared a special "once" for me where we shared stories from the last couple of months. They gave me presents and thanked me for all the work I had dedicated to help their kids. The regional Ministry of Education put together a special presentation in English about our time there. And lastly, my host family had an asado with "cordero parado" which for those of you who don't know it, please Google it. It looks amazing and it tastes even better. We'll I guess this is it for Patagonia for now. But I ate some calafate which means that I'm definitely coming back!... read more
