I was finally able to pull myself from the beautiful beaches of Brazil and head inland to what is the largest city in the Southern Hemisphere with 20 million people - Sao Paulo, Brazil. The six hour bus ride from Paraty was uneventful but arriving at the transport terminal in this giant metropolis was a little overwhelming. Luckily I had a map so I was able to get onto the subway, change trains a few times, and eventually make it to the neighborhood where my hostal was at. I thought to myself "I'm getting pretty good at this". Getting out of the subway and walking the streets to get to the address of the hostal was when the excitement really began. As I was walking on some random street trying to orientate myself I suddenly heard ... read more

And so six months of travelling through Latin America has begun! As predicted in my last blog entry, leaving Barcelona was hard - my three months there has to go down as three as the most fun I have had, and I've managed to attain intermediate level Spanish to boot. The lifestyle was amazing, I made a lot of friends, and I got into a wonderful comfort zone that was difficult to leave. As such, I was determined to enjoy it to the very end and had a typically massive night out (one of many in my last week) the night before I left for Sao Paulo. Exhausted, the TAP Portugal flight I took wasn't great - a ten hour one with just one average meal, an average entertainment system and ridiculously cold air-conditioning; something I ... read more

After travelling on what should have been a 10.5hr flight we flew over the shore of South America and into a massive thunderstorm. So big a storm that Guarulhos airport was closed due to the Lightning and 100km/h winds. We were circling and running low on fuel so got diverted to Campos. Finally we got the all clear and flew the 85km to São Paulo. We are here and so far so good........ read more

Hi Friends, So we woke in our new hostel: Global backpackers, its clean and best of all not too noisy at night!!! The plan was to go on the free walking tour of SP with this couple we had met; they were a Spanish girl called Maria and her French boyfriend Seb. We got the metro to Republica, where the free walking tour commenced. It’s free, however the guide will keep going on about giving a tip!! Not free then-but the going rate is approximately £3-4 each. We stayed with the 3 and a half hour tour for 30 mins as all we saw were buildings and the information was not that interesting, Vick, the couple and myself ditched the tour and managed to get a tour of the theater (Theatro municipal de Sao Paulo), so ... read more

SAO PAULO After a 3 hour flight from Tucson to Atlanta we boarded a second flight of 9 hours to Sao Paulo Brazil. We've spent the past 2 days touring the city of 22+ million people with our great local guide Gil ?? One of the first things we realized is that this is a HUGE city. Sao Paulo garnered national headlines last year during the World Cup Soccer matches. Many locals do not have much good to say about the whole experience with the typical government and "capitalistic" involvement. Our biggest barrier was the fact that no one in our group speaks Portuguese (aside from Gil) and unlike most of the European countries as well as Central American ones, English is not considered an "important" language therefore most adults do not speak it. Thankfully Lisa's ... read more

An overnight bus saw us arrive in Curitiba very early morning for one day. We were feeling pretty tired after two big, long, hot ‘aggressive tourism’ days at Iguaçu and the bus so we took it easy. We heard Curitiba was a university town with many parks throughout but we thought there was the feeling that it was a public holiday and nothing much was happening downtown. We took ourselves on a walk of the city center viewing many colonial buildings, churches and interesting street art before relaxing for a few hours with an English screening of The Hobbit. The following morning we were on a bus again to the biggest city in South America, São Paulo for two days. After escaping from customs officials without too much hassle (Courtney was randomly selected while walking on ... read more

Have you ever been to a city with 22 million inhabitants? No? Me neither. And I can tell you it is a pretty amazing feeling and experience to have been there. Its amazing seize, mixed with the multicultural appearance, the vibe of the city and the people makes this place a pretty awesome destination. But let’s start where I left of with my last updates . So Rio de Janeiro and the day trip to Petropolis were pretty cool to visit and after a 6 hour bus ride to Sao Paulo we arrived safe and well. The amazing thing of the bus trip was that after we entered the city limit of SP we were still travelling about for 2 hours until we reached the bus station. One immediately gets the feeling on just how big ... read more

If you love cities, Sao Paulo is for you. I am not usually a city guy, but with the help of our good friend Skip Roberts, known as Uncle Skip to the boys, we navigated this empire of over 20 million people (it is one of the 9 largest cities in the world, depending upon how you count). We arrived at GRU on time, as all of our flights in this country have been, and grabbed a cab for the hotel. Very civilized, you go to the taxi stand, they compute the fare there, you pay, get a receipt, and then to the cab (no guessing if you were overcharged). After checking in at the hotel, we were off. The metro was our main source of transportation, efficient, air-conditioned and the stations were often filled with ... read more
