The next leg of our trip we chose to do through a tour company called Green Toad. We decided after 4 months of traveling we wanted someone else to make the decisions. It's basically a hop-on-hop-off bus tour where they give you an itinerary and you can then choose how long you want to spend in each place and what activities you want to do there. Our first stop was Campo Grande, a major launching pad for tours into the Pantanal. The Pantanal is basically a huge wetland in the rainy season, which forces a lot of the wildlife to gather on the dry areas, so wildlife spotting is pretty good. Unfortunately the area is in the middle of a drought, so it was all pretty dry, but we still saw way more animals than we ... read more

Day 86 We arrived in Bonito late afternoon yesterday, and, after a bit of research into things to do for the next few days here, got a decent steak dinner at a place with live music before bed. Today we woke up at a reasonable time and, after an awesome breakfast with fresh fruit, breads, meats, cheeses, and about 6 different types of cake(!) we headed for a trip to Gruta do Lago Azul (Blue Lake Cave). As suggested by the name, this is a cave with a blue lake in it. The trip took a couple of hours as we headed about 80m downwards into the impressive cave, to admire the unbelivably bright blue water at the bottom. It is apparently the mixture of magnesium and calcium in the water that does it, but it ... read more

Day 81 The journey was going well however at around 2am, the bus was stopped and searched by Police. It was quite daunting as we were asked for our passports and questioned about where we were going but everything was in order and the bus carried on and arrived in Campo Grande around 10am. We checked into our hostel and planned to use the day to map out our next main trip to the Pantnal where we hoped to go tomorrow. Campo Grande did not have too much to offer in terms of things to do and was more of a stopping point to break up our journey. Having done some research and had an all you can eat buffet lunch, we decided to opt for four day trip which took us to a small isolated ... read more

... read more

Day 366 Thursday 11th October Foz is a funny sort of town (I guess it goes with the name), there isn’t a lot to do here (other than the falls) it doesn’t have much character, there is a heavy dose of casualness here that is borderline irritating but we kind of like it. Started our day with a great breakfast buffet before heading out to do some shopping. The casualness here is best seen in the erratic hours the shops open or close and no two shops seem to have the same hours. They main drag Avienda Brazil is mainly filled with mega shoe and clothes shops and Shelley managed to pick up a couple more tops. “God bless Brazil” was her comment after emerging from one shop as Brazil seems to be the ... read more

A short hop south of the Pantanal - bearing in mind that here, in the world's fifth largest nation, the word 'short' takes on new meaning - is the small, modest town of Bonito. Rarely has a town lived up to its name so fully - in Portuguese, as in Spanish, "bonito" means beautiful. Indeed, Bonito lies at the heart of a captivating region filled with natural marvels, from vast limestone caves dripping with stalactites to myriad waterfalls and pools hidden away in pristine forest. Touted as South America's prime example of ecotourism gone right, Bonito is an absolute treasure. A little corner of paradise in southwestern Brazil. The region's most compelling attractions, however, are its unique rivers, world-famous for their astonishing clarity. Filtered by layer upon layer of limestone rock, the water of Bonito's rivers ... read more

Tupiza was my last proper destination in Bolivia - my sights are now firmly set on the next phase of my adventure, a place which promises to be very, very different. Brazil. I'm not quite there yet, though. From Tupiza it's a ten-hour bus ride to the city of Tarija, located in Bolivia's far south and only a hop, skip and a jump away from Argentina. The Tupiza-Tarija journey - which I have to do overnight in the apparent absence of day buses - is reputed to be particularly frightening. Bolivian night buses are not exactly famed for their safety: crazily winding and unsurfaced roads, drivers behind the wheels for hours on end without breaks - and, perhaps, without brakes - and, so I'm told, often turning to the bottle while at the helm, do not ... read more

After visiting Iguacu Falls in the Brazilian state of Parana, I was highly skeptical that anything could match the sheer natural splendor of the mighty waterfalls. Lucky for me, I was proved wrong only 24 hours later when we arrived in the Pantanal to spend 3 days in a wildlife paradise. Straddling the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso do Norte, and small parts of Paraguay and Bolivia, the Pantanal is a vast alluvial floodplain 20 times larger than the Everglades. It floods in the wet season (Nov.-Apr.) and slowly dries out between May and October, forcing animals to gather around the shrinking lakes and rivers for water. It is the best place to view wildlife in all of Brazil, because the landscape consists of scrubby brush and outcroppings of subtropical trees that ... read more

After a 18 hour bus journey (our longest yet) to Purto Iguazu, home of the famous Iguassu Falls, we dropped out bags at our hostel and set off with Aki, Reynolds and Buddha (Scott Bowden) to see what all the fuss was about. The falls didn´t let us down and the view overlooking garganto do diablo (largest and most powerful waterfall) was breath taking. We were lucky enough to go on a boat trip under one of the smaller (yet pretty large) waterfalls testing Charlie´s waterproof camera to the limit. Talking of cameras, apologies for any off-centre pics as George´s camera screen in broken and he hasn´t quite mastered the point and shoot tecnique as of yet. He calls the pictures arty, Charlie just says their rubbish. The following day consisted of lounging by the poolside ... read more
