Well what an interesting day from the tour side, but my thoughts have always come back to Mum. We were waiting for the bus to pick us up when my phone connected to the wifi and downloaded emails. Look I thought, there is one from Sharon and as we have had major problems with Orcon my first thoughts were that the internet had not died again and in fact is still working - but alas it was not good news and much worse than any interent problems, my mum had had a heart attack. Many words came to mind but really I was a bit shocked, concerned, worried, stuck and out of sorts. It is a buggar when things happen and you are really unable to return to help. But Mum, when you read this know ... read more

Well, talk about conincidence - now Pete is dirty - his bag never arived in Sao Paulo - what a buggar. That means he has jeans to wear in 31 degrees. I think we will be going on a buying trip this morning - at least he must have clean undies!!! Had dinner in the old town last night - what a wondeful place to sit back and watch the world go buy, people selling earings, necklases, begging, walking past in tight jeans and high heels. The high heels are amazing because they are walking on cobble stones and the only one I saw that had a minor trip was wearing flat shoes! We ordered a piza and beer and sat there with cats roaming around under our feet, of course they did not want to ... read more

Well we are back again - we leed a tough life - Clare is lying in her bed - feeling dirty (but more on that later) and I am resurrecting the blog. Well we got here early this morning, I think we got here at 5 to the hotel - it was a bit of a blur. We took a half of a little blue tablet each (zopiclone) and then slept till 12! Now you want to know why Clare is feeling dirty - well despite what you are all thinking - it is lost luggage. Well technically it is not lost it went ahead of us - to Iguazu (we wont be there for a week or two), and we went to Sao Luis. We got to Sao Paulo - got our luggage and was ... read more

Over Memorial Day weekend, we flew to Sao Luis in the state of Maranhao. We rented a car with our friends for a several hour drive that kept going and going. At some point, Alex asked our navigator (not Jenn) if there was a speed bump coming up, and the reply was “Yep” as we launched the rental car at 30 mph. Our GPS got us to the small town of Barreirinhas, but our eco-hotel wasn’t on the map, so we eventually hired a taxi to escort us. The next morning, we thought it would be fun to take a small plane for a short sight seeing trip to see the area’s famous sand dunes intertwined with lakes in Lencois Maranhenses National Park. What we did not know was that our pilot was an aspiring Top ... read more

Höher ... read more

We arrived in São Luís at about 8.30pm after a flight with TAM airlines from Salvador via Reciffe where we had a 3 ½ hour stop-over. We also stopped at Fortalaza on the way. We were met by Mike Nelson, who used to be our neighbour on Chapel Hill Road before he and Silvia moved to Brazil. It was fantastic to see them. The last we saw them was on Christmas day last year. Mike then picked up Silvia from the hospital where she was doing some data collecting for her research with the Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA) in the area of Human Resource Management. We had a lot to catch up on. On arriving to their beautiful home, we had a drink and chat and climbed into bed in their air-conditioned guest bedroom. (Thank ... read more

Sao Luis has a colourful historic centre. Originally settled by the French, then occupied by the Dutch and Portugese, it has a mix of architecture. We stayed in a hotel housed in a colonial building, with great big rooms and a huge staircase. The historic area is being restored, with some good museums, colourful facades and cobbled streets - all of this alongside some derelict colonial buildings with trees growing from them. The contrast of restored and derelict is what makes it interesting though. We spent an afternoon meandering around Sao Luis' streets, stopping a couple of times to get a drink or an icecream. It is hot, hot, hot here - we sweat so much during the day that we have to drink almost continuously to keep hydrated. Our first lunch in the town was ... read more
