A peine partis depuis quelques heures de Lençois que notre série noire d’événements catastrophes continue… En chemin vers une cascade repérée par Darian sur notre carte, nous nous retrouvons face à un début d’incendie. Il est difficile de dire s’il s’agit d’un feu contrôlé par un paysan ou d’un véritable incendie de forêt, mais toujours est-il qu’il commence à pleuvoir sur nos têtes des morceaux de feuilles calcinées, amenées en rafale par le vent chaud qui souffle de plus en plus fort. Nous décidons de changer de cap et de nous diriger vers la direction opposée, pour une autre cascade appelée la « Cachoeira Sossego », et située à 7kms de Lençois. Chapada Diamantina 9-18 Oct 08 We could have stayed in Lencois forever, but we came here for the trekking so after 3 nights at the wonderful Canto No Bosque Pousada, the packs were back on and we set of again, this time for Fumaca, Brazil’s 2nd highest waterfall, and beyond that the legendary Vale (Valley) do Paty. We’d strongly considered taking a guide at first, and in the first couple of days in Lencois we met with at least 4 different agencies to compare offers. Something crazy must have happened to the currency lately, because even now in low season, prices are almost 10 times what out 2004 guide book says. Having spent about 5 weeks in Rio learning Portuguese, it was time to see a little more of Brazil. First stop was São Paulo, where I met Marina (a friend from Buenos Aires). The size of this city is impressive (third largest in the world) and the cultural and nightlife offering abundant. From there I went on to Parque Nacional Chapada de Diamantinas (Diamond Canyon) in the North of Brazil. There I first did a one-day trip together with a group of Brazilians from Sao Paulo. We visited a huge cave (100km long) as well as the Canyon. For half an hour per day, the water at the cave exits shines blue - an astonishing sight.
