English When we first thought about travelling to Bolivia, we didn't think there was too much to see in the country, it is just one of this places that you don't hear of a lot, only from charities doing some work there. Once I started reading the guide to get an idea of where I wanted to go and what I wanted to see, I realised that I might need a lot longer to see the country than the time I had.
We entered into the country from Peru, along the lake Titicaca, the scenary is better here than in Peru as you have a better view of the lake from Copacabana than from Puno, but we got to the place at the wrong time, although I thought that it would be the right time to be there, it was in fact independence day in Bolivia and people were celebrating it, but unfortunately they left such an amount of rubbish behind that after 1 day in the place we decide to leave and carry on with our trip. Next stop was La Paz. When you get to La Paz normally the road takes you to El Alto, another city, before approching
it, that means that you get an amazing view of the city from the top ... millions of little house clinging to the side of the canyon, but I mean millions .. just so many, it is an amazing site. We only stayed in La Paz for a day and then carried on to Oruro, time was ticking ... we were coming to the end of our trip, so we wanted to see as many things as possible. Oruro wasn't all that, so after 1 night we decided to book the train to Tupiza, right in the south of the country, from where we would have started our tour to the south west part of Bolivia including the salt flats of Uyuni. When we left Oruro with the train we went with it in the middle of a lake that is just outside the city and the lake had hundreds of birds, especially Flamengos, that were flying away as we were going past ... at that point we wished that we knew about this place because it would have been nice to walk around the lagoon for a few hours, but there is nothing about this on the guide books,
so we didn't know about it ... but it was amazing ... we were trying to take some pictures from the train like all the other tourist on there .. amazing.
The morning we left from Tupiza we meet with the other people in our group, we had a great mixute, Swiss, French, Canadians and Australians and we had a great time, really lovely people and very funny too. The thing that I remember most about the tour is the freezing cold weather that we found over the 4 days ... honestly ... I never suffered the cold that much ... think it was worst than our trip to Sapa in Vietnam, at least there at night we had heated blankets ... here we slept in mud huts, sharing the room with the rest of the group, 5 people per hut and the outside (as well as the inside) temperature was around -15 degrees .. help help!
But the scenary during the 4 days was amazing, we saw wildlife, especially pink and white flamengos, different lagoons of different colours, natural hot baths, gaysers, coloured mountains, deserts ... millions of llamas ... and the stars at night ... wow ... it
felt like we could actually touch the starts (we were at 5,000 m above sea level!!) ... even if we were out there for just 2 seconds as it was way too cold to be anywhere but under 10 blankets.
I ws not expecting that much from Bolivia, but we left loving the place, especially the south west part of the country, have a look at the pictures, I am sure it will soon be on your list of places to visit.
