So, after the crazy day we had on the World’s most dangerous road, we decided to take it easy for a couple of nights and take in the picturesque views in the town of Coroico. We were still in our group of 5 people consisting of Donna, Helen, Troy, Adrian and myself and the plans for the coming days were pretty simple, to chill, relax and maybe even get some laundry done!
The night we arrived was pretty much taken up by trying to find a suitable hostel at a good rate, as well as getting ourselves a nice but cheap dinner. Luckily enough for us, we managed both.
The next day, we decided to do some washing as most of us had clothes that pretty much wanted to walk in to the wash due the bike ride of yesterday, however Coroico being a fairly basic Bolivian town didn’t have a washing facility! Actually, this is not entirely true, as we were told there was one, however it consisted of going down to the valley, and giving our clothes a good scrub in the river! Not feeling in a hugely active mood, we decided instead to get some breakfast
and then make the short walk up the road in order to get a view of the surrounding areas. Once this was achieved, we all felt it was time to find somewhere to have a beer or two to quench our ever increasing thirst.
After a delicious brekkers, and our excercise for the day with the walk, we headed down to Carla’s Garden Bar which sounded just the ticket to satisfy our beer craving in an outdoor space with a spot of music…perfect. Once here, we settled nicely into the chilled atmosphere and took to their amazingly pristine toilets and just chatted and got drunk. It really was a relaxing great day chilling and putting the world to rights! After our afternoon session, we decided to feed ourselves and came across a cracking Pizza restaurant, however it was unfortunately full. This was hugely disappointing until a few young Argentinians who had room at their table asked us to join them. The rest of the night was just awesome chatting to our new Latin American friends eating great food, and eventually ending up like a bunch of 14 year olds, drinking in the park! We were having such a great
evening, that we very nearly missed our midnight curfew set by our hostel….the lady in charge admitted to being a little worried about us…Bless!
Basically, the whole day and evening was fantastic and we really enjoyed everything about it……until the middle of the night
It was then it struck. I don’t know what triggered it, but come 2am, it was the first of many trips to the bathroom to be violently ill. It seemed that I had contracted a touch of food poisoning during the evening! Where from, I have no idea, as everybody else seemed to have the same food as me at some point during the evening, however I know for a fact that this was no hangover or just a dodgy stomach. Unfortunately though, food poisoning wasn’t really an option for me as we needed to leave here for La Paz that day in order to catch our tour to the jungle the next day (something that I wasn’t massively up for at the time in this condition!) So, after hanging onto my stomach while the guys fed themselves (and nursed me bless them) we all made our way to the bus station (minus Adrian
who was staying another day) where we had a 3 hour journey back to La Paz. The bus was crammed full of people and more than a little uncomfortable, but luckily we made it through, and while Donna went to get her and my train ticket to Oruro with the guys, I slept trying desperately to rid myself of this bug before the trip to the jungle.
Whilst I was sleeping apparently both Helen and Troy decided to amend their plans and come with us to Oruro after our jungle trip meaning we had more of this great company all the way to Oruro and even onto the Salt Flats, so this was amazing news to wake up to in the morning where I actually felt a little better, and felt good enough to hit the airport in order to catch our stupidly small old school plane to Rurrenbache in order to start our jungle adventure……
