Luke, Jennifer Cherry, Cait, the newest addition Alice (shes from Italy so you pronounce her name Ali'ch'a) and I are sitting in our new hangout. All have been touched by a bunch of dirty faced children. Our confusion hangs over us like a heavy blanket of smoke. We are choking with watering eyes. Two little girls at one moment utterly charming and in a heart beat begging and obnoxious. One of them giving us new Spanish names. I am Leyste (Lizzz) and Cait is Keys. She wrote us little notes and her and her sister danced for us. We gave her a few coins. Soon her sister is begging for money. Insistant. She won't leave us alone. I do not know what the others are thinking. I can only say for myself. No. No I can't ... read more

I leave tomorrow night for my trip to Mendoza and Santiago, so probably won't blog until I'm back. I'm pretty excited. The weather is supposed to be nice and it'll be good to get out of the city for a bit. A few weeks ago I had a bunch of the other Rotary scholars over to my apt for a get-together. Here are some of the pictures from that. Otherwise things are going well. My classes are busy. Most of us who chose good masters programs here are discovering that they mean business and we have a ton of reading. ... read more

I´ve heard way too many people prononce the city's name in an American accent, so I decided to share the phonetics with you ;-) Goodness gracious, I haven't written in awhile and I really should have been writing day by day. I just got back from my nearly three-wk stay away from BsAs Thursday night. I spent two weeks in Bariloche, then 1.5 days in El Calafate, 3 days in El Chalten, then we came home early. But I'll get to that. I had a terrific homestay in Bariloche, and not soo terrific schooling. In fact, don't tell my mother, but I only went to four out of nine days classes. The first week was alright, but when I met my instructor for the second week, I just decided that I would enjoy the city, read ... read more

After all that hard trekking Angus and I decided to see some of the country by car. We did a four day road trip in NorthWest Argentina, starting in Tucumen and heading further North towards Salta. It turned out to be a great way to explore a beautiful area, and we met some other travellers doing the same. The first day we drove up high on a mountain road through hot tropical rain forest. After the desert landscape of San Juan, it was a refreshing change of scenery. The trees went very high and there were hundreds of different species of butterflies. We visited the ruins of Quilmes. These are 1000 years old, where the native Quilmes people lived and defended themselves from the Incas and then the Spanish. The museum was full of pots and ... read more

After arriving to Bariloche, first thing I did was a jeep tour around the city - as it was supposed to go through all the good viewpoints. Bariloche is situated on the banks of a huge lake, and has an interesting structure - It's relatively a big city of population around the 100,000, but in most places it's quite narrow and very long - something like 8 or 10 really long parallel streets. Unfortunately it was a cloudy and a bit rainy day, so the views weren't perfect, and unlike what I expected, the tour concentrated more on the 4*4 driving, and much less on sight seeing. We had a really crazy driver, so we enjoyed allot from the driving - he was driving around 50-60 kph, on the worst possible roads. The other drivers were ... read more

Last night was my first real tango opportunity. We had a party for the program, and everyone got together at La Fluvial, the best place in the city to get a bunch of American college students drunk on red wine without many serious repercussions. It was beautiful, right on the river with a balcony overlooking everything. Beba, the director of the program, had scared up about 10 tango instructors to teach the American kids how to dance. For me, it was lovely. I had the opportunity to dance with two of them throughout the course of the night. It was great, but slightly more difficult with the compromised balance that comes with too much alcohol. However, the second tango instructor that I danced with, Fabian, has invited me to go to a milonga tonight. I might ... read more

Got away from the city for my last week in Argentina. It's really off season so this little resort town (if you can call it that... it's a bit sleepy) is a GHOST TOWN, but it's quite what I wanted. I have a cabin, in the woods, 150 meters or so from the deserted beach. Weekenders still come but during the week I have been alone, except for the numerous stray dogs who try to follow me around. (Thank goodness I finally learned "Get!" in Spanish). My cabin is adorable and cozy and comes with all the conveniences a solitary girl might need... including high-speed internet. TV channels aren't great though and I have been getting my fill of Law & Order and House, plus a few really bad movies... While here, I've been sleeping a ... read more

I have been avoiding writing because I am still depressed that my camera is broken and I have no pictures to show and tell about. However, too many days are passing, and so before we get too behind on the updates, I will post a summary and commentary about my life in la gran ciudad de Buenos Aires. Sweating in the Subte (underground subway system) on Tuesday afternoon I finally scored an empty seat and was able to sit down and observe my surroundings. I saw hundreds of people, all in their own worlds, minds, troubles, chores and rhythms. Each rushing from work to home, home to work, to school, to home, to lunch, to church, to the hospital, to the 'shopping' or somewhere else. Each one thinking in her or his own mind, one million ... read more

Well, we have been having some trouble exiting what we are now referring to as the "cursed south", it appears everyone else down here had the foresight to plan ahead, and manage a way back north. Add to that, its the end of all things pleasant for the area (each morning the snow on the mountains gets closer to town) and the mass exodus has thwarted our efforts to depart. We have been reduced to a 5:30AM day bus, and even then we had to wait two days to get tickets for it. In the meantime we have been keeping busy seeing some more sights, hanging out with the local animals. Yesterday we took a boat just off the coast of Ushuaia southeast into the "bahia de Ushuaia" past the Isles Bridges and further east to ... read more
