After a week of Spanish classes Liz has progressed to being able to answer philosophical questions about the past and Ross has learnt how to order a litre of beer. We both agree that Ross' classes have therefore been much more useful. Having spent ten days in South America's second largest city (we think) we were keen to get out into the nearby Pampas in search of gauchos (cowboys), so we headed to a small and what appeared to be sleepy town called San Antonio de Areco. We arrived during siesta time and quickly begun to wonder whether anyone actually lived in this town. After checking into our hostel, we had a wander around and realised almost the entire population was either in the river or barbecuing next to the river. Whilst Liz really wanted a ... read more

A waterfall that gives continual birth to a river, the playground of the local people; a condor in flight, floating beside the mountain chain; a Sunday artisan festival of hippies, complete with tasty beer (a rarity in South America): It was, without doubt, an exceptional and memorable long weekend. The village of Mina Clavero is situated in the province of Cordoba, Argentina. Caroline and I were looking for some mountains or countryside, ideally suitable for day treks during the final long weekend of our stint working as teachers in Buenos Aires. I had originally cast my gaze towards Paraguay; however, Caroline hit upon a place neither of us had ever heard of, yet when we mentioned it to Argentinians, we always heard the same response, “Qué lindo!” As a result, we had been literally counting down ... read more

The Sweet Sierras of Cordoba Traveling between the popular tourist meccas of Mendoza and Codoba, I eschewed the overnight bus taken by most travelers, and spent a month exploring the charming small towns enroute, first in the state of San Luis, now in Cordoba province. The beautiful, colonial city of Cordoba is ringed by mountains set with jewel-like towns offering cool respite from the sizzling city. The mountain towns are all built along grassy-bordered rivers with boulders in fanciful Henry Moore shapes, and shaded by tall trees--perfect for cool afternoon walks. In the blazing hot, northern Argentine summers, the towns are bursting with refugees from big city Cordoba. Fortunately, I was there in September and October, spring, when the mountain temperatures were perfect for hiking, and I had river and hill walks and swimming holes to ... read more

Once again we are amazed as we have been so fortunate to stay with such a welcoming and wonderful family. The hospitality was amazing and we couldn't have asked for a better two weeks with our Argentine family! Cecelia's cooking was amazing and she drove us all over the place to see the area of traslasierra! Sofi and the rest of the family were so much fun and kept us on the go at all times!! Our house was such a comfortable pace ... when we would get back from our daily activities we would usually sit down for a snack and a mate at 7 and have a little snack. After the snack we would maybe go for a walk in the city, watch some TV or go visit some different parts of the city. ... read more

We are getting to experience education in Argentina! Andy and Sparta Principal Dale Stafslien are here on Fullbright Exchanges. Cecelia, who we are staying with and who is a principal at a secondary school here in Nono, Argentina came to Sparta last year and now we are here to work in her school. The school is about a 30 minute drive from Cecelia's house. All of the students and other teachers at her school have been more than welcoming to us. They are so interested in our lives and what it is like in los EEUU. Of course the first thing we noticed is that students are students wherever you go, as we looked into one of the classrooms and saw a few students texting discretely under their desks. We have given many presentations to different ... read more

Mina Clavero was a much anticipated destination of ours. Seeking refuge from the large cities, especially after the party hardy adventures of Cordoba, we were anxious for camping and time alone with nature. The drive was beautiful, even though it was raining and overcast. We ledt from Cordoba and headed out of the city up through mountain ranges, winding snake-like roads lead us up and over the mountains over rolling green hills. Ironically, as we were boarding the bus in Cordoba an old man asked us about our plans, as he noticed our bags and camping gear. He advised us to stay away from Mina Clavero, that it was a tourist destination but not beautiful like the town he is from, another 2 hours south of MC. He told us the real beauty lies beyond the ... read more
