This morning at 07:43, after sailing 124 nautical miles at an average speed of 11.5 knots, we arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The ship has tried to make us all terrified of venturing out in Buenos Aires on our own by disseminating information about how dangerous it is in Buenos Aires. No doubt this is to encourage the passengers to book Holland America Line on-shore excursions!? Bernie and I decided that BA is probably no more of a risk than any big city in the world and, provided you remain aware of your surroundings and exercise a sensible level of caution, all will be well. Apparently the big scam in BA is to squirt or spray something onto your clothing and then tell you that you have bird poo on your back/shoulder which they will help ... read more

After a final meeting in the morning it was time for me to check out of the hotel and head towards the ferry to Buenos Aires for a few days holiday before heading back to Australia. Whilst checking out I asked the hotel to book me a taxi to the port...and discovered that all taxis in Montevideo were on strike as a taxi driver had been shot in the poor area to the west of the city. The hotel told me the number of a bus which would drop me near the terminal so I headed off to the main street to wait.. After a decent wait the bus still hadn't arrived, but lots of others which had 'Ciudad Viaje' on the front had driven past. I walked to the next bus stop where there was ... read more

Geo: -34.6118, -58.4173The last couple days has been transition from Beunos Aries to our honeymoon cruise ship; Rhapsody of the Seas. Its actually our 3rd cruise with Royal Carribbean, and 7th cruise together overall. We werent expecting a lot from this one, selected for its itinerary rather than grandeur and luxury. Its actually one of the smallest RC ships. So far though, weve been pleasantly surprised and pretty impressed. Getting from hotel Moreno to the cruise port was pretty easy. 80ARS cab fare had us there in 15 minutes, just after midday. Checking in was slow going, but a relatively painless experience. Our cabin, 2627 is an interior windowless cabin, but comfy, cosy, quiet and away from crowds. The ship is 11 decks, has indoor and ... read more

Geo: -34.6118, -58.4173If you enjoy the sensation of being unpredictably pierced in the ear drum by 1000 decibals of excessive, misplaced, arbitary, elevator music midway through a low-key informative narrative then the Beunos Aries yellow bus might be for you! Okay, so the audio tour on todays sightseeing bus wasnt the greatest, but opting to use our full day here in Buenos Aries to get around by open top bus allowed us to see a huge amount of the city. It cost under $60AUD for both of us, and we managed to get completely around both the yellow and blue bus circuits, as well as jump off at a few places. I cant imagine we could have seen as much any other way.The buses ran 9am-8pm around about 30 stops on both routes every 20 minutes. ... read more

Geo: -34.6118, -58.4173Today we bid goodbye to Brazil. We woke for breakfast in Iguazu, checked out and met Bruno from G Adventures for a transfer to the airport. We'd cross the border into Argentina and board a domestic flight from Argentina Iguazu Airport to Jorge Newberry Airport in Buenos Aries. If only all economy seats were so comfortable and roomy as this particular LAN jet. Yeah, we had emergengy exit seats which afforded us extra leg room, but even still. The seat width, comfort, was great. Two hours later we touched down in Buenos Aries, capital of Argentina. Being a domestic flight, there were no hassles here. We gathered our bags and some cash before proceeding to international arrivals to order a "radio" taxi (prepaid). The currency here in Argentina is the Argentine Peso (ARS). 1AUD$ = approx ... read more

Travelling to Argentina was a last minute decision. I had been backpacking for a year and so much had passed with family and friends that I was wondering if it was the time to go home, plus with spending nearly 4 and a half months in Australia and New Zealand I had been in a safe place, with English being spoke everywhere and it being just like home. South America was going back onto adventure territory and although I was ready to get a bit of normality in my life, I took the big leap of the 11 hour flight to get to Buenos Aires. I had attempted to learn Spanish via an app on my mobile phone but only got a few words that would not really be helpful on getting around. Things like an ... read more

Buenos Aires (BA) is beautiful city of wide avenues and lovely architecture. We are here for two days. This afternoon we visited an artisan centre with outdoor museums , lots of tango dancing and music to be heard and full size statues made from papier-mache. Weird but interesting. Very hot 40 degrees today. Also visited a newly refurbished port area with lots of restaurants...very pleasant. Had afternoon coffee and sweet croissant in Tortonio restaurant built in 1858. ( see photo). A lovely old building. Tomorrow we have a trip to see the 'highlights of BA... read more

R: Apart from the various frustrations detailed in our previous blog, we enjoyed our time in BA. We had a great Airbnb for very little money which was on the 7th floor of a very smart apartment block with a old style lift which ran up through the middle of the stairs in essentially, a Victorian iron work cage. It was the type where you slide the doors open and shut to operate it. The apartment had a balcony overlooking our street (Montevideo) and pretty decent wifi. Though the TV had nothing recognisable except the Buenos Aires tennis championship, which only had a few people we recognised. So we watched a lot of Argentinians play tennis. We've been eating out a lot in Salta and San Pedro due to not having a kitchen, so we decided ... read more

R : We have reached something of an impass. I have always wanted to go to Patagonia - it was a "must" for our trip, and had been since day one. Our plan from Buenos Aires was to head south to Patagonia and in specific see the glaciers and Torres del Paine national park in Chile. But it wasn't to be. The next blog is more about the frustrations we have been feeling at this point in the trip. In no way do we forget how lucky we are to be able to do this trip, but at the same rate, it becomes your life, and when things don't go to plan, the worries and frustrations feel the same as any impass you might find at work or at home. It hasn't helped that both of ... read more

So much for that last trip. For now. Right now it's all about Patagonia. We will be gone almost three weeks and it is an adventure we are both very excited about. This is also a tour, beginning in Buenos Aires and ending in Santiago, with a cruise of Tierra del Fuego and stops in a few national parks in Chile inbetween. This will be our second time in Argentina, the first time being the year before last when we visited Buenos Aires and Iguaçu Falls on our own. I (and a cast of thousands!) loved Iguaçu Falls, but Buenos Aires stole my heart. The city proper, particularly the Recoleta and Palermo Barrios were wonderfully walkable, with people everywhere all day and late into the night. On the streets we visited, we never once had that ... read more
