At 10.30am I went on a free walking tour around Buenos Aires lasting 4 hours mainly looking at the buildings. My plan for today was to get a quick tour of the main sights and then decide which ones to visit in more depth when I return to BA in February. Today felt like a real victory because I’d managed to walk and find my way from my hostel to the city centre and arrive more or lesson on time in the humid heat. I did the tour in Spanish with a local and was pleasantly surprised to find I could understand just about every detail about the Argentinian history and the only major obvious difference between Argentinian Spanish and Spanish from Spain to me was the pronunciation of ll as j, so they would say ... read more

Buenos Aires is described as the Paris of South America. As we stepped off the metro and onto the apartment lined streets of San Telmo (the district we’d be staying in), we really could have been walking the streets of the French capital. One constant reminder of our true location still remained; the need to play hopscotch, dodging the pieces of dog poo that seem to plague the entirety of South America. Apparently the issue plays highly in the local mayoral elections and yet those same mayors are yet to come up with a way to clean up the issue. The Parisian theme continued at the hostel. A converted townhouse, a narrow winding tile clad staircase linked the reception to the rooms above. We planned to stay in Buenos Aires for a significant amount of time ... read more

My flight arrived into BA at around 9am local time. I successfully managed to get my baggage, change some currency at the Banco de la Nacion in the airport, have a cup of coffee and book an official taxi to my hostel. I arrived 2 hours early to my hostel and needed to wait until the room was ready. 15 minutes after I’d put my bags down I was ready to go exploring. I got talking to the owner of the hostel Antonio and he gave me a map and sent me on a tour at 3pm. Unfortunately with the heat, and the enormous size of the neighbourhoods in Buenos Aires I didn’t make the tour on time so I wondered around the neighbourhood and planned tomorrow. Recoleta, my neighbourhood is a safe one and the ... read more

We have settled into our apartment. We are exploring the city. We take the metro 8 stops up then walk back. We find the neighborhoods have their own personalities. Recoletta is an expensive barrio and the shops and restaurants are high end. Palermo SoHO is the largest barrio and has the most green space. We find the City has a lot of small parks but Palermo has a large park like Golden Gate Park. Our apartment which costs $35.00 per night is fully furnished. Our landlord stocked the refrigerator with milk and orange juice. The apartment also includes a cell phone. Mark brought his iphone, he had it unlocked before we left home. We bought a sim card so now his phone has a local number and I carry the phone provided by our landlord. We ... read more

I have always loved fireworks. I was so disappointed when Danville and then San Ramon stopped having fireworks. Tonight I was in fireworks heaven. We arrived this morning and without a full nights sleep headed out to explore our new neighborhood. We went shopping and walked and walked. We were beat and decided to go up to the roof to see if we could see any fireworks instead of walking to Parque Tres De Febrero to watch the fireworks. We bought sparklers and took them up to the roof with a botle of wine. O my the fireworks surrounded us. The sound bounced off the buildings. Everywhere you looked there were professional stlye fireworks. We watched for 40 min but I can still hear them going off. This was the best introduction to Buenos Aires. Happy ... read more

Before my trip to Patagonia, I spent few days and New Years Eve in Buenos Aires, at the place of Paola Romina and Pablo, friends of couch surfing. A small issue at the airport in Berlin, where I took my flight. I arrived around one hour before the flight and was told at the check-in that I cannot fly because I do not have an Esta for U.S. because of a change in Atlanta. Luckily the office of German post at the airport filled the form for me and I catched the flight few minutes before the departure. picture comments later ;)... read more

Yesterday I met up with a friend from my previous tour as we were both in Buenos Aires and wanted to see more of the city. We went to a museum which had art by Van Gough, but I found it kind of boring (I'm not an arty person). After that we went to the markets and visited a graveyard.....which is one of the biggest attractions in Buenos Aires due to the amount of mausoleums they have there (it's like a small city). After that I over ate again and then I went shopping by myself. I'm sure I've put on 5kgs already, but I'm happily still eating large meals and don't care at the moment. Last night I met up with some people from contiki and we tried some steak, empanadas and ice cream. Today ... read more
