We hit the gym hard this morning after a day off and then just laid in the sun for the rest of the day. Felt like a fat lizard on a hot rock. Still about 85 – 90 degrees, but the humidity is definitely getting equatorial. Another pod of dolphins passed down the starboard side of the ship, but these guys were under water and going like the bullet train. The water is so clear here you can see the fish swimming alongside the ship. We entered the Gulf of Tehuantepec at Noon, and the winds picked up a tad, as did the seas. This place is notorious for raging seas and howling winds off the high peaks of southern Mexico during February through May, as the northern and southern air currents collide here (think a ... read more

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday – which on sea days in our family = Day Off!! Slept in late and awoke to VERY hot and humid conditions, calm seas, and almost no wind except from the passage of the ship. Almost 90 degrees by Noon, and the Captain came on and warned everyone to use their sun block, stating it will be this way until we hit Southern Chile, well below the Equator. No more winter for two months almost! Steve hit Jimmy HARD (Carol says, “Hard enough to double him over”) this morning (of course, Carol had her sensible assorted fruits for breakfast). Very interesting event during breakfast… From the navigator’s map on our stateroom T.V., it appears we are about 25 – 30 miles off the coast. While eating we passed (or they passed us) a ... read more

Another foggy-to-sunny day today with one big change – Temperature has gone from the mid-50’s to the mid-70’s. Sea temperature matches the air temperature as we head south toward the Equator. After our workout, we headed up to the Sun Deck and just chilled while reading our books and drinking iced lattes all afternoon in the warm sun. Breeze freshened late in the afternoon so we headed back to our balcony, only to be met by a huge pod of dolphins cruising down the starboard side of the ship – they came right along-side and traveled the length of the ship, and then threw us a flying salute and headed away toward Hawaii – Sailors for centuries have considered this Good Luck! Had a great formal dinner with some new friends from New Zealand (husband is ... read more

Geo: -15.3689, -94.1309Today the ship moored off Boca de Valeria which means mouth of the river Valeria and we were tendered over to a landing stage where loads of kids were waiting to greet us and hopefully "adopt" one of us for a dollar. Managed to successfully get past this lot and walk into the village. All the wooden houses are built on stilts because during the rainy season the plains are flooded, at which time everyone uses a canoe to get from place to place. We saw the school, church and local bar. Today was obviously a holiday because the ship was in. Some of the kids were dressed up as native Indians; others were holding birds, crickets, dead caimans all for a dollar photo or gift of some kind. We walked on to the ... read more

Geo: 14.03, -60.98It was another hot and sunny day as we docked at Castries in St.Lucia. We boarded the bus and were taken first to an "old" colonial house which belonged to a famous local. There were only two rooms to see as the family were still living upstairs but they did contain some lovely Lalique glassware, mahogany furniture and porcelain. We were given a refreshing glass of rum punch with piece of banana cake after this tour. The house was only built in 1942 and as our house was built in 1876 I might start doing tours!Back on the bus we were next taken to a view point overlooking Marigot Bay, but there was only a small viewing platform as most of the space was filled with souvenir shops. The next stop was supposedly in ... read more

Geo: 20.4816, 99.9383Up with the alarm at 05:30 and its my turn to head out in the dark for breakfast. By 07:10 I am standing outside Kong Court waiting for my ride to turn up and he is there on the dot. We drive around Chiangmai making pick ups then set off north with a full load of 10 people. First stop after about 1 hour is the usual hot springs at Ban Sop Pong, appropriately named with the whiff of sulphur in the air. I sit and soak my feet in the hot spring water for 10mins then we are off again. The road is very busy this morning and the fields as well with people cutting their rice. I note that they all seem to be doing the threshing by hand with no signs ... read more

(I'm writing this blog entry in 2014, but wanted to share as much as I can remember along with the pictures!) The Oasis of the Seas is HUGE! We had a blast on this ship. We cruised out of Ft. Lauderdale on our honeymoon. There are multiple areas including the pool(s), central park with real trees, and a carnival area complete with a carousal. It even has an ice skating rink. Most ships have a single tower of rooms, this one actually splits the room blocks into two so that you have complete open air in the middle of the ship. The result is balconies that can face the action, or face the water. There is a zipline and 2 flowriders (waves / boogie boarding), putt putt, rock climbing wall, dive show theatre... it goes on ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » Saint Helena November 24th 2012

….. and all from the comfort of your own home. November in St Helena has been warmer with some strong winds. Just as in England, the early summer starts with some beautiful weather – blue skies with high white cloud and good comfortable temperatures. This early summer promise though has been blown away with the south-easterly winds that seem to have anchored low cloud with rain over the island. The locals say that this has been the worst weather in living memory; some say it reflects a change in the climate. The success of the airport project hinges on wealthy and discerning tourists coming to the island. Some typical English summer weather is not what the doctor ordered. One of the sunny days encouraged a walk to the highest point on the island, Diana’s Peak. At ... read more

After being on this ship for a little more than a fortnight we have formed a little group of friends. We gravitate together everyday and chat about all the fun activities we have done. So when our new friend, we will call him "Ken", because that is his name, heard about the hypnotist show, he wanted go and volunteer. So we said we would be his support team. We all met a half hour before the show at our normal perch and walked into the show room together. There were 21 chairs displayed on the stage and then the hypnotist walked out after a flamboyant introduction from our cruise director. He asked for volunteers and we were all very vocal in getting attention for Ken. Ken made his way on stage and the hypnotist approached me ... read more
