I'm writting this on my last leg of a crazy little trip...in JFK, ready to head home...ASAP! Do you consider yourself travelling when you take a metro ride to go for a lunch or dinner with friends that you haven't seen for a while. Well, I don't...so this is maybe not about travelling...expect that prior and after the metro ride, I had to add a few plane rides the last two weeks. Travelling is not only about places....it's not only about discovery new sites...it can simply be about seeing your good friends...about people.... Well, and how do you do when they are all around...the world... This is my fifth round-the-world, and for sure the most crazy one, done in less than 15 days. Trust me, that's not the fun part about it. But being a single ... read more

Geo: 43.7496, 7.43701We boarded the SS Eurodam on Friday about 2-30pm and soon settled in to our cabin, 6141. This is on the starboard side and has a balcony and is very comfortable. This ship is huge, a 10 storey building but the length of two street blocks at least. There is plenty to explore. On the first night Phil Hoffman Travel hosted a cocktail party for an hour as we left harbour. We said hello to several other travellers from Adelaide. Then we went to find the pub quiz. As most of you know we love quizzes. We were going to go it alone but we were invited by a lovely American lady, Tulli, to join her team and as the first question was an obscure US one we quickly agreed. This proved to be a ... read more

We flew to Sydney the day before departure and stayed over night in a studio room at the Napoleon Hotel at the corner of Napoleon and Kent streets. It was very pleasant, not too noisy, and very close to the departure warf. Next morning we visited the Opera House then dragged our cases to the warf in the afternoon. Days 1, 2 and 3. On departure there was some excitement as some yachts were on a collision course with the ship and directed to clear the area by the pilot boat. Unfortunately the sail boarder capsized in front of the ship, so the ship had to divert to avoid him/her. After clearing the Heads the sea was a bit rough and some passengers were seasick although the ship was not moving much. Astronomer Lesa Moore (Starry ... read more

Dark Sky Week Well, how long is a year? We know all the numbers, don’t we but there is something miraculous and strange that from our own point of view, time is not constant. A year away from family, friends and hometown has been longer than I imagined it to be. My geriatric gap year has been as full of fun, challenge, interest and difference as I imagined it to be – I know that it will stand out to be one of the best years of my life – but a year is still a jolly long time. Reflecting back, there is a year of public events in the UK and the rest of the world that scarcely rippled the quiet surface of life on St Helena. The South Atlantic Media Services (SAMS) news which ... read more

Sticky Knickers Well, a whiff of cordite in the air this week. A few weeks ago a very glossy prospectus was produced by Enterprise St Helena (a NGO, publically funded, charged with regenerating the island’s economy alongside the airport project) featuring some very comprehensive changes suggested for Jamestown. Now, the island’s capital (think Much Wenlock rather than London or New York) will no longer be the entry point to the island once the airport opens, the RMS is decommissioned and goods are taken to the wharf at neighboring Rupert’s Bay. So, as with all communities preparing themselves for a tourist-based economy, changes do need to be made. Jamestown is, apparently, the best example of a Georgian town in the southern hemisphere (yes, I’m sure that there must be another one somewhere) but, if truth be told ... read more

Geo: 18.0303, -63.0488Apparently St Maarten/St Martin is all about racing. This Caribbean island is divided between European colonial masters and folklore has it that the formal division was the result of a race between a Dutch and French participant who were supposed to speed walk in opposite directions around the circumference. Outside of Herve V, it would probably not surprise anyone to learn that the French runner was accused of cheating by running, and, as a result, the French portion is quite a bit bigger. The French side is an Overseas Collective (read mini French colony) while the Dutch side is effectively a province within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Dutch side is supposedly working toward full independence but the population tops out at about 42,000 so it won't be a world superpower any time ... read more

The First Week Thursday 7th Feb The week started with an interview for 'The News' my local newspaper, on Thursday the 7th Feb 2013. Saturday 9th The news did a full page article on page 3 and put a video online of me eating corn flakes. This led to a local news agency contacting me about distributing my story worldwide. Sunday 10th The Daily mail put an article online and "The Sun" did a small article on page 31 url=http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=the%20times%20mick%20hobday&source=web&cd=5&cad=rja&sqi=2&ved=0CEwQFjAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailymail.co.uk%2Fnews%2Farticle-2276523%2FMan-spends-36-800-travelling-63-countries-perfect-bowl-CORN-FLAKES.html&ei=C1EmUYzcEsa20QX19IG4Cg&usg=AFQjCNEv-D8eugWiKTCMW8_egSYQTpQSwA&bvm=bv.42661473,d.d2kThe Daily Mail Article Monday ... read more

Road Closures Congratulations to our friend Richard who started his job as Senior Editor for the St Helena Broadcasting (guarantee) Corporation Ltd (SHBC) yesterday. You will notice the title ‘Senior’, not ‘Junior’ nor ‘Chief’ not even “foreign’ or ‘Sport’. ‘Senior’ sounds pretty impressive, a post of some status within a complex hierarchy of editors that might make up this arm of the ‘Corporation Ltd.’ I spoke with Richard today (off the record, of course) about his new post and it was a little disappointing to read that he might, in fact, be the only editor within the organization. On the other hand, his title extends beyond the world of newsprint and on-line journalism (I will of course be keeping up to date with the stories, fictions and reports that make up the weekly potpourris that makes ... read more

Enjoying the sunny weather and clear beaches here at Ibiza. Its so peaceful that we dont even see more than 500 people during our stay. Its probably we come at the wrong time, though theres so many shops and restaurants, 90% of them arent open at this season. Really wana feel the real Ibiza and its Hippy market. We just feel like staying at a lonely planet here. "QUIET but PEACEFUL"... read more

While on our Easter 2012 Maui vacation, the Wife and I wanted to try zip-lining. I have to admit that the only thing remotely resembling this that I'd done, was on what we in Australia call a "Flying Fox" and this was at a now-defunct lion safari park near Newcastle. It was only a rope suspended between two trees about 50m apart, with a pulley block suspending another piece of rope that you grab onto and a 'friend" would then drag you along. Excitement level of 1/10. Being always up for some fun and adventure, this "zip-lining" stuff looked damned interesting. I did a bit of keyboard research and finally selected Piiholo Ranch as the place to try. We asked our 11 other traveling companions and we had 3 takers - all women. The others failed ... read more
