Geo: 34.9556, 32.3106Sometimes there can be too much of a good thing, and though our itinerary has been dominated by beach destinations, mixing things up for a few nights and checking out the Troodos Massif ended up being a great choice, as our two nights there were one of the highlights of the trip. Beyond the hospitable people, hiking, neat little villages, and wine, the fact that it offered a cool respite from the heat elsewhere in the country, if you consider 29 C cool, was also a nice bonus. Cyprus is infamous for being a package holiday destination for people from the UK, and for good reason - beautiful beaches, tropical weather, good food, reasonable prices ... why wouldn't it be? Of course, seeing firsthand what holidaymakers from the UK have done to places like ... read more

Geo: 34.7642, 32.4152It's the infamous meal found in Cyprus, Greece, the Balkans, and the Middle East - meze, described by the guidebook as a non-stop culinary assault, it sounds like the volume of food served at this type of feast is sufficient to cause injuries, and perhaps even death. Calamari tentacles sticking out of your nose, tzatziki oozing out of your ears, choking to death on a big fat sieftalia ... tonight's dinner was fraught with peril, but being food adrenaline junkies, we were up for the challenge! The food comes in waves, with the first invasion being bread, salad, and assorted dips - it's just to get things going and isn't overly substantial, though care must be taken not to overeat right away, as bread and dips can be the worst enemy of the volume eater, ... read more

Geo: 34.93, 32.87Here's a brief Greek language lesson for you - there are a number of short nature trails in and around Kalopanayiotis that Maria had pointed out to us last night, and on one of these trails leading to an old windmill, the path was lined with fruit trees - you could find apples, grapes, peaches, and pomegranates hanging from the branches, and most of the fruit was ripe enough to eat. As we marched along the trail, we marveled at both the abundance and variety of fruit, and as we finally reached the end of the trail, we found a few trees with signs reading ΨΕΚΑΣΜΕΝΑ hanging from their branches ...So what exactly does ΨΕΚΑΣΜΕΝΑ mean? After returning to our guesthouse, on-line searches yielded mixed results, but our research suggested that the word means ... read more

Monday- Day Three Sailing from The Korean Strait into The Sea of Japan Without a light source it is so easy to keep sleeping, so we woke around 8-45am. Quick shower and walk the length of the ship to get to the aft lift to get to Deck 13 and TaiChi. Our cabin is 6527, quite near the front and low, with big seas we would feel quite a bit of movement but up to today it has been like a mill pond. This is a busy piece of ocean, lots of fishing fleets, cargo boats, floating garbage and yesterday huge amounts of jelly fish. They were huge, golf umbrella size and bigger. Think the world is conspiring with me. Our cabin is forward and this is the end of the ship where the ... read more

Geo: 37.65, 21.3167Katakolon is a small town on the coast very near where the Olympics first began over 2000 years ago. It's about a 45 minute drive out to the site to see the ruins. Mom is getting tired of ruins. She says that if you want to see something ruined, check out my knee. Our next stop is Venice so in order to let her leg rested up, we skipped the history lesson and stayed in town where she just walked the 3 blocks of the Main Street. We arrived in this port later than usual, at 10am and we had to leave by 4:30pm so we didn't have a lot of time anyway. There were some nice shops to see and Mom liked that. Quite a few dress and clothes shops and the usual jewelry. ... read more

Geo: 34.9917, 32.825Nothing beats whipping a car around the tight and twisty curves of the Troodos Massif, Cyprus's mountainous region, even when it's in a Nissan Micra, the modern equivalent of the shit-mobile Mr Bean putts around in. Back-to-back-to-back curves, hairpin turns, undulating changes in elevation ... even the grossly-underpowered Micra couldn't ruin this driving experience, but one thing could - a head-on collision! Today was a lot like a Mr Bean episode, driving through the back roads of Troodos in our embarrassing little car, slowly making our way to Kalopanayiotis, the final destination for the evening. Along the way, we stopped for a nice lunch in a quaint little village, and picked up a few bottles of excellent wine from the Ayia Mavri winery, after a brief tour and tasting with the lovely owner of ... read more

Sunday-Day Two of Cruise sailing on the Yellow Sea and into The Korean Strait. Royal Caribbean line run many ships and Voyager of the Sea is one of the biggest. We have 1165 crew on board from many countries. Most of the staff seem to be Chinese, Indian or Pilipino, but as the clientele come from all over the globe so too do the staff. Our room attendant's name is Hitesh and he's from Bombay. His job is to wait on us hand and foot, keep our rooms clean, basically our own personal butler albeit shared with 9 other rooms. This is the closest I will get to feeling like royalty. At tea last night Jun Jiang was our waitress, an English master’s graduate from the north of China. She had spent 6 months ... read more

Today is the last full day of our cruise. The ship is sailing through moderate seas today and we can actually feel the sway of the ship (at last). The weather has been great all during our trip, but David is glad that at least once we got a little “real feel” of being at sea. Janet is feeling a little nauseous so she would like the sea to be calmer instead. We got up about 7:30 and went to the Botticelli Dinning Room for a leisurely morning meal. Last night Janet had asked our Head Waiter if there was ever going to be Eggs Benedict on the menu. He said to come to his section and he would arrange for it. We were seated at a table for 6 and told the waiter that we ... read more

Hello again. Today is a day at sea with no shore excursions. For that reason we were free to sleep as late as we wanted and not have to set a wake-up call. Despite that, we both woke up about 7:00 AM anyway. We decided to try the sit-down breakfast instead of going through the usual buffet. Janet was hoping for Eggs Benedict, but they weren’t serving that today, so she had the Classic English Breakfast instead. David had a more or less typical omelet. After breakfast, Janet went to meet up with her Knitters & Natters group to work on her project. During that time, one of the ship’s staff came to check on them and heard how much this small group appreciated having the item on the Princess Patter schedule to help get them ... read more

NOTE – There was a problem with the Shipboard Server and the Blog could not be posted last night. This morning Janet had made an appointment in the Spa to have a manicure at 8:00, so she had to get up kind of early after having watched the movie last night. She got up and dressed, and headed to the buffet for breakfast, and then on to the Spa to have her fingernails painted. Now they are a dark red and very shiny. The Spa also included a hot stone and ice hand massage. After the Spa, she went on to the Adagio Bar to meet with her Knitters & Natters group, where she worked on some knitting. Apparently she does it differently than the others in her group and they were all marveling at her ... read more
