The Rip Sept. 28, 2008, Direction Island, Cocos Keeling, Australia I sat on the dulled and polished coral that had been washed ashore on the southern-most tip of Cocos Keeling’s Direction Island. I looked out to sea to get a glimpse of what I was getting into. A procession of well-armed waves crashed on the break. The waves rolled over the coral and sand and picked up steam as they funneled into a narrow strait between Direction Island and Prison Island to the south. The idea, albeit, probably not the safest I’d ever heard, was to put on a mask, fins and a snorkel and kick your way out into the main artery of the channel. The current would take one on a short and fast ride over a deep coral canyon, giving us some incredible ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Indian September 25th 2008

Sept. 25, 2008 50 meters west of Direction Island, Cocos Keeling, Australia As we approached Cocos Keeling I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. About four or five miles away on the horizon, a long strip of palm trees seemed to grow out of the ocean. As we moved closer, a white strip of sand separated the trees from the sea. The water grew bluer and bluer as we got closer, and the spectrum of colors widened. The shades grew deeper. Some of the blues are so bright and so blue there is no way to describe them. They are like nothing I’ve ever seen. Any image from this atoll, which rests 1,000 miles from Western Australia, could be on the cover of a National Geographic magazine. At first glance, Cocos Keeling is paradise. The ringed ... read more

Oceans and Seas September 23rd 2008

(The following is slightly tongue-in-cheek, so spare me the aggrieved comments.) Why do so many American travelers feel the need to denigrate their own country? "I'm sorry, I'm just a dumb American, I don't speak your language or understand your culture." Translation: "I'm sorry, American's are just a bunch of beer drinking rednecks who watch NASCAR all day. Not ME, of course, I speak 3 languages (not yours) and am highly civilized. But for the rest of them, I deeply apologize." Now, I am not exactly a world traveler (Canada, Mexico, Italy, Jordan, Israel, and the Caribbean), but I do live in a city that allows me to observe visitors and immigrants from every corner of the earth, and here is what I see: LANGUAGE: Foreigners learn English, plain and simple. No one need apologize for ... read more

September 21-27 The days at sea pretty much go by as a blur. Same thing every day. Up around 8:30, head to the Lido for breakfast then hang around reading or such for the rest of the day. Yes Marc, I can just hear you now although we aren't lolling by the pool with margaritas. It's freezing on this ship! We try to find a place to keep warm and with little to no sun it's difficult to say the least. They do have some interesting seminars on digital photography that I have been going to. But for the most part, it's just hanging around. We were so desparate for something to do the other day that we actually went to see the movie that was playing, Speed Racer. Oh man, that was one bad movie, ... read more

September 20th Today is the first of 8 days at sea! Dave is wondering if he'll go nuts before we reach land. He isn't much for sitting around! Around 11:45 the captain came on and said that we were turning around and heading back east. Apparently a passenger had a medical emergency and we were going back to meet up with the Canadian Coast Guard! The helicopter came a couple of hours later, circled the ship and then lowered crew and the basket to hoist up the ill lady. Rumor had it that she had had a stroke. The packed her up, hauled her up into the helicopter and headed off. We turned around and continued west. The captain said that this would not interfere with our schedule at all. So odd that the last time ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic September 19th 2008

It was a ROUGH night last night at sea. I was woken up around 3am to terrible shaking and noises that sounded like we were scrapping the bottom of the ocean. Of course we weren’t, as the bottom is thousands of feet below sea level. It was simply us hitting the water after a big swell. This continued for the rest of the night, into the morning, and still this afternoon. I was able to sleep but was woken many times throughout the night. The shampoo bottles in my shower tipped over and continued to roll around. Nicole and Steph lost everything off their night table. Training this morning was even cancelled for new staff, as people were getting up and puking in the middle of it. Lisa worked the centre this morning and said that ... read more
