Geo: 1.79048, -157.357The alarm goes off at 6:30am but I ignore it for 20 minutes. Time to get up, have a light breakfast and prepare to disembark the ship for Fanning Island. Far off the beaten path and almost 1000 miles south of Hawaii, Fanning Island is a remote, beautiful hideaway with just over 1,300 inhabitants. Locals call it "Tabaueran," a Kiribati word meaning "heavenly footprint." The island is an atoll -- a ring-shaped coral reef enclosing a protected lagoon and shaped like a footprint when viewed from above. With its sugar-white beaches and clear, blue-green water, it is a perfect paradise for snorkeling and swimming. We have breakfast and then head to deck 4 to get our tender ticket. We get #30 and they're calling 1-4 now. The twins get some number they're not pleased ... read more

Geo: 1.05463, -158.247It's Saturday all over again. This International Date Line makes following the blog difficult. We had no Friday but two Saturday's. Referring to the picture of the International Date Line I posted on October 15 and our cruise schedule to the right, you can see that we pass over it numerous times on our journey. Days disappear, then reappear later. All I know is that when we get home, everything will work out. Tomorrow the clock turns back one more hour, bringing us from the present four to now five hours behind Pacific time. We'll give these hours back on the way home. We have three sea days prior to Pago Pago so we slept in today until 9am. Mom is feeling better today so we go for breakfast. After, she returns to the ... read more

Geo: 6.66461, -156.797We have two sea days before we get to Fanning Island, an atoll about 1000 miles south of the Hawaiian Islands. The weather is partly cloudy but always warm and humid, mid 80s. I'm determined to get the blog caught up in these two days but there are so many things going on all the time, it's easy to become distracted. Today we cross the International Date Line and instantly lose Friday, October 16. We go from the 15th to the 17th just like that. Now, tomorrow we'll get that day back but it becomes quite confusing. We have no Friday but two Saturdays. Since we're traveling east to west, one would think we would cross once, lose a day, then cross back later, gaining it back. But our route isn't a straight line ... read more

Geo: 14.4347, -156.006This morning the water has a roll to it. Not bad but add in the cloudy skies, threat of rain and the hurricane Nora nearby, we can only hope we won't be affected. The temp is 81F at 9am when we head for breakfast. Now remember, we don't eat bacon, eggs, hash browns, sausage, pancakes, sweet rolls, omelets and chocolate milk. It's all offered but we stick with fruit, cereal, oatmeal, juice and coffee. It's not exciting but the best for us.I organize pictures while Mom takes care of some ship business. We decide to hang out at the pool where we find that they're serving fresh coconut water. Mom can't wait to get a coconut. We have a small salad for lunch with water. I go out to the pool while Karen returns ... read more

Geo: 20.9614, -150.82Same story. Cloudy but warm. Seas choppy. We set our clocks back still another hour. That makes 4 hours behind Pacific time. Mom checks out a sale on the Lido. T-shirts, bags, hats, same old stuff and generally $10. I stop at the desk to get an update on my $250 shipboard credit. Now they need me to get bring my own laptop so they can view a PDF of my account showing the stock portfolio and my name on the same page together. Apparently, the statement doesn't carry my name through on every page except the first. They can't just use my USB drive with the doc on it so I will return after 6pm to see Daisy. She's nice and I understand that it's a Carnival issue, not Holland America. A matter ... read more

Geo: 24.1267, -140.186Get up - Same * Breakfast - Same * Weather - SameWith that out of the way, we went to listen to the captain explain the inner workings of the ship including navigation, communication and mechanical operation. Using pictures of the ship under construction and from inside the control room, it proved interesting. Apparently, there is a hurricane in the area and he has changed course somewhat to avoid it. I worked some more on the blog but still unable to synch with the website and send it out. I now have October 1-5 in the que ready to go.A quick lunch snack and off to hear Kainoa discuss the islands of Kauai and Maui, then hanging out people watching for a while. We'll have to return soon to get ready for dinner tonight ... read more

Geo: 27.6835, -130.43We're enjoying our 2nd morning with an extra hour of sleep. I see that Internet service is still out. It's Tuesday and we'll pass the point of no return later today on our way to Hilo. We have six full days at sea between San Diego and Hawaii and this is day 3. How much excitement can I generate while traveling within the confines of a cruise ship, a small one at that? I would describe it more like a retreat. We see those people who venture from their cabins hanging out around the pool and spas, library, dining areas, bars and assorted presentations about our upcoming destinations. While there's plenty of things to do for us, it's difficult to find things "to write home about". We need to generate some excitement to entice ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » Atlantis October 4th 2015

Geo: 29.3439, -126.299We awaken naturally at 8am and I witness the latest sea conditions from our cabin window. The waves rise to horrific heights, reaching far up into the sky, tormenting the dark clouds overhead, then, with a ferocity never seen by my eyes, return to the ocean, forcing spray and sea foam to pummel our boat and testing the best engineering offered by man against Mother Nature's strength, already well proven over time. That's the story I gave Karen while trying to wake her. Actually, the large waves and wind has subsided and leaves the ship with only a slight rolling, much less than before. Mom is actually feeling fine today, although I detect a few bags still in her purse for emergencies. Apparently, we moved through a time zone overnight and find it's only 7am. ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » Atlantis October 3rd 2015

Geo: 31.0153, -120.762This was the the day I promised to catch up on all the blogs and submit them for your review. Nope. First, we needed to get up early, say 7. Instead, we both woke up at 10am. I needed the morning to load pictures, check grammar and send out the blogs for 3 days. We were going on a kitchen tour at 10:30am. None of this happened. All night the ship was rocking and rolling. This morning is no exception. Our captain blames El Niño. The weather is cloudy, cool and windy. No one is out on deck. Many are hiding out in their staterooms. Karen isn't doing well with this movement either. She's moving slow and we barely get to breakfast. Because of the late hour, the main breakfast area is now closed ... read more

31.08.2015. Today's German comedy word: Ausfahrt = this is a versatile word that in this case means 'exit' but you could easily have einfahrt, abfahrt gute fahrt. Whichever ‘fahrt' you use and whatever context you use it in, it is always a source of amusement for non-Germans young and old!! Our first full day aboard was a day at sea so this gave us the chance to familiarise ourselves with the layout of the ship. A child's water park area had been constructed on the pool deck complete with water cannon. An array of pipes spew streams of water out at various angles and the pool itself contains no more than a few inches of water. There is a mini golf area on deck 12 the sits around the ship's funnel. I have already walked the ... read more
