Geo: 21.1726, 94.8615Myanmar is a country with many puppys and pagodas. We are travelling in a group, four bikers from Jindabyne and us. We have a driver, a government assigned minder and our Tour Guide who is Burmese but speaks English just like Forest Gump. He is hilarious, very knowledgeable and a heck of a nice guy. We are staying in hotels pre booked for us, we follow the support minibus, our guide gives us tips like take sunscreen and flyspray and don't have to put in too much of anything really. The country is very beautiful and a pleasant change to what we experienced in India.... read more

Geo: 21.9759, 96.0842For me (Darren) it was a day of mixed emotions as we headed towards the immigration post to exit India, for some unknown reason I have defended India's reputation as it being a great place to go. By exiting meant to me that it would probably be the very last time I would be there.. Why the last time I hear you say… well its complicated. I think the India of old heldsome mystical magic that seems to have just gone now days… gone where I don't know its just gone. However in saying the above we were extremely fortunate to have travelled most of India and Nepal with Sarah and Thomas. As a group we were able to travel a more adventurous route and camp away from the towns and cities in a relaxed ... read more

Geo: 24.0384, -122.999143/1000 internet minutes left. I was able to get a few more blogs off today so I'm catching up now. After a late breakfast, it's about 11am and we check out the Lido poolside. There's a rumor that the ship's Signature Shops are having a sale. No way! Save 50-75%? Let's go! I think we're getting towards the end and they need to dump inventory, however, this ship is going to Peru and back (30 days), the through Panama Canal (16 days) before starting a World Voyage (over 100 days) so there will be more opportunities for them, not us. I take a few shots of Karen checking out the wares and notice another area set up with food and "Chinese" cooks and attendants. It's a Mongolian Stir Fry. The guests pick out the ... read more

Geo: 15.9106, -129.832Karen is fine this morning. I hate to sound like a broken record but we're up late and off to breakfast. We try to leave in the morning for a few hours to give our cabin stewards, Luzon & Ono, a chance to tidy up the room for us. Neither of us are big breakfast eaters so we stop by the theater to catch the end of Kainoa's lecture on the Hula. The last 10 minutes are interesting, as are all of his presentations. He makes mention that he has Class A pearl jewelry and will make it available for inspection up in the Crow's Nest now. Mom likes him and joins others to peruse the gems for sale. It seems his brother (ya, I know) or some relative is a jeweler in Hawaii ... read more

Geo: 8.50713, -132.205We sleep in a little since we lost an hour of sleep with the time change. After breakfast, we're on our way to the room when a kitchen aid asks us if we want to go on a kitchen tour. OK. We enter through the same doors that our waiters exit from with our food when eating in the dining room. The equipment is basically the same as one would have in their home except that there are many and each one is huge in comparison. Our guide points out freezers that hold pallets of food, bread ovens stacked one on top of another and food prep areas where 8 workers can assemble deserts at once. 96 people work in the galley and 122 more service staff out in the dining room. The staff ... read more

Geo: 4.43622, -132.392We are closing in on California. 84F and mostly cloudy. It's tough writing about doing nothing everyday. Sure, there are activities to pass the time while we make our way home and I'll continue to write about them. Just remember that what you all are doing is probably more exciting than anything we're doing here. How's this? "We went to breakfast. I had 3 prunes and Karen had some oatmeal, or was it muesli." Who cares? So you know, the day's news will be short and pictures few unless some hot news hits this floating rest home. But I digress. So I spent the morning in the library and Mom went to the pool. I joined her in the afternoon but we had an invitation to the Indonesian Crew Show put on by members ... read more

Geo: 1.66089, -133.095Not a lot going on today. That's good. We don't even go to breakfast until almost 9am. Then at 10, they have the King Neptune Ceremony out at the pool area. This is a fun activity taken from a mariner's tradition that pokes fun at crew members passing over the equator for the first time. Lots of pomp and circumstance takes place with King Neptune, pirates, lifeguards and officers of the ship. Victims must first kiss this fish statue, then covered with some kind of goop and finally thrown in the pool. About 20 crew went through this, then many more crew members ended up in the pool. After the ceremony, the pool was drained and cleaned. Note: At 8:58am we crossed over the equator from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere on our ... read more

Geo: -5.44979, -135.501No alarm today! We get up late, well 8 o'clock. We have breakfast- the usual. It's almost 10am when Karen and I split up. I attend Kainoa's spiel on Hawaii's conversion from Kingdom to Statehood. He's always interesting and a great speaker. Meanwhile, Mom heads to the pool. We agree to meet in our room around noon to prepare for our Mariner's Society Brunch in the dining room. Dress code is smart casual, you know, dress pants and a Hawaiian shirt for me and a black & white dress for Mom. Captain Fred Eversen greets us, we toast champagne and have a nice meal. I have cod and Mom, spinach soufflé. They give each person a Holland America ceramic tile. We have many others at home. Karen sees the menu for tonight's dinner. It's ... read more

Since today is Saturday there would be no morning mass! Sharon can go to either Vigil Mass tonight or Sunday mass tomorrow evening before our Pinnacle reservation. I was happy to notice that the cabin steward had replaced the blue body gel in the shower dispensers for the translucent yellow gel that Sharon and I are accustomed to. Sharon had suggested, wouldn’t it be great if we had a dispenser like that in our new home. We took our time getting to the Lido and I decided to get an omelet for my weekend breakfast. I had to wait in a different line to get some potatoes and sausage patties, and it seemed to take forever. Sharon had scrambled eggs. She regrets how they don’t make the French Toast to order as they did on the ... read more

Sharon went to mass and promised to try and get me my now favorite pecan croissant and bring it up to the Crow’s Nest where we would meet for Travel Trivia at 9 AM. I was working on the blog, seated at the table by the window, and opened the curtains to notice that that cloud bank that had been a front many miles off of our starboard side, was now directly overhead. The seas continued to roll gently and whitecaps were plentiful. I took a shower, dressed and headed for the Crow’s Nest and found that our preferred table and seating were available in a nearly vacant lounge. I’d already picked up some Sudoku forms and Jim joined me as I sat down. Lucia also arrived. Mass was over and Sharon arrived with her chocolate ... read more
